Mangalore, Sep 14: Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza on Saturday September 14 laid the foundation stone for the shrine of Blessed John Paul II at Pope grounds, Bajpe here.

Speaking on the occasion, the bishop said, “When the Pope visited Mangalore in 1986, about 5 lac people had gathered. They were very eager to see him because the Pope led the life of a true disciple of Jesus Christ. He inculcated the value of Jesus in his life. We will feel his presence amidst us after the shrine is built and soon he will be declared as Saint since the miracles have been reported across the world.”

The vicar general of Mangalore diocese Msgr Denis Moras Prabhu, Fr Onil D’Souza, Fr William Menezes, vicar of the Pezar deanery Fr Remejius Aranha, parish priest Fr Leo lobo, assistant parish priest Fr Praveen D’Souza, vice-president of the parish council Rocky Lobo, secretary Gracy Sequeira, ICYM president Roshan Periera were present.

The Shrine will be built by the diocese of Mangalore in association with the Bajpe parish to commemorate the visit of Blessed Pope on February 6, 1986. It will be built next to the podium from which the Pope had addressed 5 lac people.

The podium has been preserved as a historical monument and a statue of the Pope is already installed.

The ground where the Pope made the historic speech is called as the Pope ground and a layout of houses is already built, called the Pope layout.

I forgot to mention one more point yesterday. The Pope greeted the gathering in kasturi Kannada language to which he received roarding affirmation: 'let us all strive and work to build a peaceful and loving generation,
[' shanti hagu preethi bhavaneya janangada nirmannakke navella jotheyagi dudiyona'] hope these beautiful words would be inscribed at the welcome arch to this memorable site.

I agree with you all the ways. People use to love one another, celeberate one another, feast together, help one another. Life was blessed by then. Lets pray for those days back in our great Mangalore.

Oh..Great..This event was really a great moment in our college life.., unlike today's communal atmosphere, those days it was attended by people from all the religion & communities... In fact we had a stall near the podium selling coconut water and ice creams...

Very thoughtful and timely gesture on the part of all concerned to come up with a small but nice monument commemorating the historic visit of Paul John Paul II to Mangalore in the year of 1986. These are "Monumental treasures" filled with history that will uplift the image of not only the Mangalore Diocese but also the legacy of Christianity of India.

Perhaps, one of these years His Holiness Pope Francisco will also plan a trip to India, and possibly His Holiness might also include Mangalore as part of His itinerary.

A short trip to Bajpe and see the construction sight is on our next visit to India is in the planning. There is always something more to get enthused in life, and every new excitement helps.

IT IS INDEED COMMENDABLE TO REMEMBER THE HISTORIC VISIT OF THE BLESSED POPE WHO BLESSED OUR LAND AND LEFT A LEGACY FOR US TO CHERRISH. I WAS PRESENT AT THAT GROUND WITH CSI BISHOPS FURTADO AND JATHANNA AND WITH HOSTS OF OTHERS TO GREET AND MEET THAT GREAT POPE. LATER AT ROME AND JAMAICA I HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING HIM PERSONALY AGAIN. IT WAS INDEED A WONDERFUL ECUMENICAL EVENT WHEN [LATER BISHOP] C L FURTADO READ ONE OF THE BIBLE READINGS. THANKS TO BISHOP AND MANGALORE DIOCESE FOR THE HOMAGE THEY ARE PAYING WITH THIS COMMEMORATIVE MONUMENT.
