Mangalore, Oct 6: In what may be termed as a milestone in the history of Kudroli Shree Gokarnanatheshwara Temple and Mangalore Dasara celebrations, two widows on Sunday October 6 took the lead in performing rituals at the temple and were formally appointed temple priests.

The two women were welcomed with a grand procession flanked by music bands, Chende and saxophone sets. They performed special puja to the presiding deity on the occasion.

They also offered puja to deities Annapurneshwari, Hanuman, Navagraha, Krishna, Dattatreya and Sharada. This was followed by Theertha and Prasada distribution to the devotees. They also inaugurated the newly installed idol of Lord Dattatreya and offered special prayers.

Addressing mediapersons, Janardhan Poojary said, “After the death of the husband, a woman used to be isolated from society. She was not allowed to take part in any auspicious occasion. Earlier there was a system called Sati, where the woman who had lost her husband had to immolate hreself in his funeral pyre. In another system, a woman had to shave her head and sit between four walls of the house. But as time passed and reformation took place, these inhuman systems were completely eradicated from society.”

“Brahmashree Narayana Guru said we all are children of God and we have equal rights before Him. His preaching has been followed here. Earlier, people belonging to the backward classes were not allowed to enter temples. But Narayana Guru changed the whole untouchability system. He faced criticism and threats, but he overcame them was able to get rid of such systems from society,” he said.

“This system that has been introduced in the Temple not only gives dignity to widows, but also gives them the status of mother, in lines of the saying, 'Matru Devo Bhava', meaning 'Mother is God'. This will also help in reducing atrocities against women, rapes and harassment,” he said.

The two widows who took over as priests in the Temple are Lamxi Shanthi, resident of Bantwal Mooda and Indira Shanthi of Ballur, Puttur. One of them is also a member of gram panchayat in her village. They have been trained for priesthood by Lokesh Shanthi for the past four months.

"Mantras do not matter much, but true devotion is important for any offering. Even if married women or girls irrespective of caste, creed and religion, comes forward to take up priesthood, we will train them," he added.

Congress member Kripa Alva, who was also present, said, “With the introduction of this tradition, a social transformation has taken place in this Temple. There is no written script that says women cannot serve as priests. None of present rituals are written, but practiced and followed by people themselves.”

She added, “Raja Ram Mohan Roy was the one who abolished Sati system from our society. Differences in opinion are quite common in such revolutionary works, but this is indeed a progressive step towards widows. Women are making headway in each and every field and there is nothing wrong if she becomes a priest. Devotion is something that is needed for any religious ritual and in fact, women are more devotional than men,” she added.

H S Sairam, Raghavendra Kulur, Madhava Suvarna, Padmaraj R, B K Tharanath, Ravishankar Mijar, K Maheshchandra, Harikrishna Bantwal, Kallige Tharnath Shetty,  MLA Mohiuddin Bava, corporators Deepak Poojary, Rathikala and Kavitha, Arun Coelho among others were present during the installation ceremony.

"Whoever come or whoever go" (Hey rey baraad, hey rey Povaadh) we don't care but will not forget the contribution done by congress to the downtrodden, OBC, SC/ST. Today Hindus are united it is only because of CONGRESS because if the Strict rules where not imposed in 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's by the Congress against discrimination in all fields like in offices, classrooms, in streets etc etc and also in the divine places like Temples today the Hindus would have been broken within themselves if these things where not brought under control by Congress.

    Congress made strict rules like,
    1. OBC, SC/ST must be allowed to
    enter Temples.
    2. Reservation for OBC, SC/ST and
    also for other financially
    backward community so that all
    these communities take the
    opportunity and become
    successful in their life
    through government JOBS, become
    Engineers/Doctors Dentist etc
    through CET etc etc.
    3. To live respectful life in the
    society. (Strict action against
    those who tease or
    discriminate OBC/SC/ST).
    4. etc etc.

This blog is not enough to discuss the contribution of Congress to OBC/SC/ST who comprise 80% of Hindu population. Just Imagine what would have happened now, if this 80% Hindu population would have been treated in the same way how they were treated prior to Independence by some sect of people? Answer is the Hindus would have been divided by themselves.

Therefore Congress has kept Hindus united.

    INDIRAMMANA CONGRESS PAKSHAGH JAI.
    SONIAMMAGH JAI.
    JANARDHAN POOJARLEGH JAI.

    Rohit Poojary,
I can't understand what you want to prove. Be specific man. Here the question is widows vs priesthood. Talk only about this and don't confuse yourself or others. Can JP go to other temples and do the same thing? I doubt....If he can... one JAY to him from me on your behalf.

    P.R.Akash, Dubai,
    You have commented as follows,

"Shameless fellow even went on to do Urulu Seve for Soniamma".

Therefore I have just reminded you the contribution of AMMAS (INDIRAMMA & SONIAMMA) & other Leaders in Congress for the upliftment of OBC/SC/ST in 50's, 60's, 70's & 80's.

Therefore there is no wrong in doing URULU Seva to the Ammas in the Congress who gave their life for the sake of OBC/SC/ST inspite of lots of opposition from some sect of people during those days (the same way how you oppose today from bringing some good changes for widows in the society).

Even after this you want to comment I can't help GOD SHOULD SAVE YOU.

I would not only recommend him to Karnataka ratna but also Bharatha Ratna (not only to him but any politician) if they can solve one and only one problem of 2013:
    (a) Out of the 17.5 Lakh engineering graduates who graduated out in 2013 only 1 Lakh have found jobs and the remaining are jobless.
If they can moot an idea or even appear to be make an honest attempt such politician deserve Karnataka, Bharatha Ratna together.
Widows have their family to support them or atleast Government already has old age pension that can be availed. What about these youngsters (by the way we pat ourselves for being the young nation) who have set foot to the real world who have their entire life in front of them. What should they make of it?
Sad part is it is not on anybody's agenda.
With this problem unsolved we are staring at a social problem very very soon.

I liked the idea until I saw JP placing his arguments for it on TV9. He is trying to gain political mileage. The timing it seems is perfect to prevent any alignment of Hindu votes by dividing the house in advance on caste lines. What JP does not understand is Poojary community in Mangalore/DK may be dominant and may be it is alright to ridicule minority Brahmins & simply correct them by asking them to shut up. But that is not the case elsewhere. There is no poojary community of relevance to vote bank.
Especially on TV9 he was putting his arguments (they were no arguments except "Mathradevobava") forward just like he is used to in Mangalore in the arrogant manner. And he even brought the concept of now extinct "sathi" also. The Panel included practising priests, a woman priest and a politician(JP). It was a wrong panel in the first place though.
If it was JP trying for the first time, it was different point altogether. But that is also not the case. He refused to engage in any meaninful debate but instead resorted to abuse (Neevu summan koothukolli. Maatu yettidare jagrate) and the intent was clear, provoke a debate and potential clash. His argument was clear. Brahmins, Shastra and religion (which he confessed he knows nothing about) are there to be ridiculed and anybody can do anything. It's only that when you apply for a high paying job that you need good marks, good understanding of the field, prior experience etc. Everything else, any tom dick and harry can do was the conclusion.
He was also invoking the social revolution of Narayanaguru. But what he or others in the panel lost was people are fast losing faith in God and people like JP front ending it only reduces Kudroli temple to monument worthy of pilgrimage to politicians.
If he fails to ruffle any feathers, I bet, these very women priests will be pushed back to oblivion.

We are altering our customs according to our convenience which is against the natural rule & such procedures will adversely affect. Incase if this was acceptable we would have had many woman priests in our history. God itself has differentiated men and woman physically and mentally we are just ordinary people how can we go against God? And this is not only applicable in Hinduism but also in Christianity & Islam, why don’t we have Christian or Muslim Priests?

There are so many different ways to help and support Widows isn’t it??

    Dear Mr. RN Pujari,
Your world it appears starts and ends in Kudroli. There is no need to export women priests to other states. Other states already has women priests for long time now. Kerala is best example. In Tamilnadu DMK successfully graduated a lot of priests from various castes. It's only that this plan of garnering votes ran into trouble when supreme court intervened. In the ensuing period these priests are now rendered jobless as, Govt cannot promise them pay, temples do not accept their service and most importantly, they lost 4 precious years undergoing training.
Let us be wise and learn from other's mistakes rather than commit ourselves and learn from it...shall we?
Bottom line: When politicians, especially JP does something take it with a pinch of salt.

Temple is a sanctity where many people like me come with lot of belief Jp using this temple as his own property. Any changes in temple should be done after consultation with elders in the community and religious expert. He is using this temple for his publicity purpose. He lost 4 successive elections due to this type of attitude. Lord gokarnathshwara has already taught him lesson. Hope lord will end all his nonsense and restore the sanctity of the temple. All those who are responsible for this must be congratulated. Women should be given equal opportunities in all walks of life including religious rituals. Moreover, this type of bold steps by the leaders of the society and popular temples will definitely go a long way in the days to come. All over India Vibhooti (Holy Ash) application on forehead is compulsory for priests of Shiva Temples. But only in Tulunadu a very strange practice is followed by applying Sandalwood paste instead of Vibhooti by Priests of Shiva Temples. Of course it was forcibly started by a Sect 500 years ago which is wrongly followed till now. J. Poojary has broken this wrong practice also, which is very commendable.

Ideally these things can be done at grass root level without much publicity and I am sure no one will oppose such a good change in any society as long as we have good understanding and educated public. If the curse is on Brahmin, we are wrong, 99% of them are educated and changed themselves and adopted with the contemporary world.
