Kundapur, Oct 28: "Sowjanya’s family has admitted that Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Heggade had contacted the then home minister and urged for arrest of the culprits soon after the rape and murder of Sowjanya. Despite that, people are speaking against the Kshetra to malign its image. When decent people are criticized they remain afloat. Dr Veerendra Heggade will come clean. Let there be no confusion in this regard," said former minister MLA Kota Srinivas Poojary.

He was speaking participating in a massive meeting to condemn criticism against Dharmasthala held at Pre-University College grounds at Kundapur.

"Dr Heggade has already asked that the case should be handed over to the CBI. The matter will be pursued during the upcoming legislative assembly and legislative council sessions. There is no need to be scared however influential the guilty may be. They should be punished. However the propaganda against the Kshetra is uncalled for," he said.

K Gopala Poojary, MLA of Byndoor, addressed the gathering and said, "Nobody can erase the trust kept by people on Dharmasthala. We have a tradition of keeping a picture of Dr Veerendra Heggade in our house for devotion. The state condemns the attempt to malign the image of Dr Heggade who has implemented programmes to strengthen women folk and make them self reliant. Punish the guilty and hang them but do not drag Heggade. People know Heggade and do not value allegations against him," he said.

Former Dharmadarshi of Kolluru Sri Mookambika temple, B M Sukumar Shetty said, "Dr Heggade is a great donor. He has sacrificed himself for the development of the area. Criticizing him or the Kshetra is like disrespecting the Hindu religion. The government should be persuaded for the enquiry, not the Kshetra," he said.

Author K Shivananda Karanth said, "Some people are misusing the freedom allowed in democracy. An author has said that it is no wonder if media comes to our bedroom. We should not blame those who develop culture and make it grow," he said.

Basrur Sri Mahalingeshwar temple dharmadarshi B Annappa Hegde presided over the meeting. Maranakatte Sri Brahmalingeshwara temple dharmadarshi Seetharama Shetty was present. Journalist U S Shenoy gave a key note address. Teacher Dinakar Shetty conducted the programme.

The call for protest meeting saying that the Sowjanya case is being misused to malign the image of Dharmasthala and Heggade was attended by thousands of people. A protest rally was held at 2.30 pm from Gandhi maidan to the pre university college grounds. More than five thousand people participated in the meeting who had gathered disregarding differences of religions. Though there was seating arrangement, it was not sufficient to accommodate all those who had gathered.
