Lata says Sachin deserves Bharat Ratna

Mumbai, Nov 16 (IANS): Bharat Ratna and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar has said that cricket great Sachin Tendulkar also deserves India's highest civilian award.

"Whatever he (Sachin) has done for the country, very few people can. He deserves the honour. He has made all of us proud," Lata told television channels Friday. She received the honour in 2001.

Lata felt that the master blaster could have carried on playing for at least one more year.

"The way he played in the first innings, it seemed he could have played for another year or two," she said of the 40-year-old who made a fine 74 in his farewell Test against the West Indies.

Asked what Sachin should do post-retirement: "I think Sachin should open a cricket academy. He should impart his amazing knowledge to the youngsters. That way Sachin will be around through them."

    You are very much right Af. TATA , Premji and many more icons created thousands of jobs to our young generation. they deserve the highest awards of our nation, they are the true heroes of our nation. not who says i will move out from Mumbai if the flyover is built near my building. And someone who plays only to make records. .

    In My opinion the Bharat Ratna should be given to the people who does more social work and help the nation to come up with new ideas to combat poverty and national issues. not who is an entertainer. they do not entertain pubic for free of charge.why she did not name Anna Hazare for this award. Because her thoughts are limited only to entertain the world. Maybe many people will not like my opinion but this is a fact.

    To judge a 'Bharat Ratna' nowadays is very difficult... In fact there are many legendary heroes who can given this award posthumously...
    With names of proposed personalities being mired in one controversy or the other with technical restrictions too playing a part the task becomes that much more difficult, not to speak of the credentials in the 'ing committee' whose preferences too
    Might be influenced by political pressure and inclinations.
