New Delhi, Dec 31 (IANS): Taking note of reports that the Uttar Pradesh Police was not serious about investigating the physical assault and torture of an RTI activist, the NHRC Tuesday issued notice to the force.
Seeking a reply within two weeks, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to the director general of police, Uttar Pradesh and senior superintendent of police, Gautam Budh Nagar.
The commission has taken suo moto cognisance of a media report that Right to Information activist Anoop Singh was abducted from Dankaur town in Gautam Budh Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh and tortured.
"His private parts were burnt with cigarette butts and he was beaten with hot iron rods before being dumped in a neighbouring district four days after his abduction Dec 13," said the NHRC.
"Despite an FIR (first information report) being registered, the police was reportedly treating the case as a routine affair," it added.
The commission observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise serious issue of human rights violation.
