Lucknow, May 25: Former Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan on Wednesday resigned from the post of Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council (UPFDC) chairperson paving the way to re-contest the Rajya Sabha bypolls on June 15.

Official sources said here Jaya's resignation had been accepted by the state government.

It is likely that she contests the RS by-election, for which filing of nominations would start from May 29.

The former Samajwadi Party RS member had to resign from the upper house of Parliament in March after the Election Commision (EC) said she held a post of profit by continuing as UPFDC chairperson.

The post was not included in the list of post of profits in the bill passed by Parliament recently. Hence, Jaya had to resign before contesting the bypoll.

EC will hold byelection for two seats in UP, one of Jaya and another of independent member and industralist Anil Ambani, who had resigned soon after the cinestar took the step.

The nominations for the RS bypolls could be filed between May 29 and June 5, while scrutiny of papers would be done on June 6.

Withdrawals can be made till June 8.
