Ajman: Inter-University Sports Festival concludes at GMU

Ajman, Mar 17: A record number of over 2000 students from 23 universities and colleges from all over UAE participated in the 13th GMU Annual Sports Festival, which concluded with a grand prize distribution ceremony at its campus in Ajman.

The week long festival witnessed strong competition from all the teams who vied for top honors in cricket, volleyball, basketball, throw ball, badminton, table tennis, tennis, squash and swimming.

The festival was held under the patronage of Thumbay Moideen, founder president Board of Governors of GMU.

‘This year’s competition was very high. All colleges and universities have fielded their strongest teams and individual sportsmen to participate in the tournament. Every team or individual deserved to be a winner. Despite tough competition, we have witnessed best sportsman spirit and enhanced social interaction amongst the students. This is a very positive sight’, said Prof Ishtiyaq Shaafie, Chairman of GMU Sports Committee.

As part of the Annual Sports Festival, Intra-University sporting events were also held before the commencement of the Inter-University events. There was a high spirited participation from our own faculty members and staff from GMU and GMC Hospitals from Ajman, Sharjah and Fujairah, who participated in various events, he added.

GMU Provost professor Gita Ashok Raj was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony. Other guests during the colorful ceremony included Mr. Elrayah Omar, General Manager, Galadari Motor Driving Center (GMDC), Dr Omar Al Zubaidi from Alain Hospital, Deans and Directors of constituent colleges of Gulf Medical University, Sports Directors and officials from all participating institutions. A total of 37 Trophies, 400 medals & participation certificates were handed over to the winners & participants in various tournaments.

Thumbay Group UAE was the Platinum Sponsor & Galadari Motor Driving Center, was the Gold Sponsor. The other sponsors included Lipton, MIST & AVON. The festival was held in collaboration with Body & Soul Health Club and Spa. The grand sports event is held each year keeping in view the philosophy of Gulf Medical University “Healthy Body for a Healthy Mind” & to instill the spirit of Sportsmanship and healthy competitive attitude among the students.

Huraira sports representative from GMU presented a report during the concluding ceremony. He thanked the constant support, inspiration and guidance of the university president Thumbay Moideen and Provost Prof Gita Ashok Raj. T

"he president, himself an avid sportsman and a champion table tennis player, has always encouraged the students to excel in sports. GMU has been trendsetter in inter institutional sports events which was started in the year 2000. We have witnessed an increase, not only in terms of number of institutions and students but more importantly in the high level of competition over the years. Gulf Medical University has always believed in inculcating sportsmanship enabling overall personality development amongst the students. Gratitude was expressed to partnering institutions who have been participating in big numbers. This shows the popularity of GMU Sports Festival," he said amidst loud cheers from the students.

The following institutions participated in this years festival - College of Medicine, GMU, RAK Medical & Health Sciences University, College of Dentistry, GMU, University of Sharjah, Horizon of Knowledge, Sharjah, American University of RAK, College of Pharmacy, GMU, College of Allied Health Sciences, GMU, University of Wollongong, Dubai, College of Graduate Studies, GMU, BITS Pilani Dubai, City College International, Ajman, Canadian University in Dubai, Victoria College, Sharjah, American University of Sharjah, Ajman University of Science & Technology, International College of Law, Business Administration & Technology, Ajman (ICLBAT), Manipal University Dubai, Skyline University College, Sharjah, London American City College, Murdoch University, Dubai, Institute of Modern Technologies (IM TECH), Sharjah and Emirates Aviation College Dubai.

Skyline University College Sharjah emerged winners in Cricket, while Emirates Aviation College Dubai was runners-up in Men’s category. Other results are as follows:
