Annual Global Day celebrated at Gulf Medical University

Ajman, Mar 25: It was an evening of pomp, gaiety, and show of talent by the students of Gulf Medical University.

They celebrated the GMU-GMCH Annual Global Day at campus’ sprawling ground in Ajman, which was attended by over 2500 students, their parents and friends apart from the faculty and staff of GMU and GMC Hospitals.

Students from 70 countries who study at the university were in their ethnic best, be it in their colorful national dresses or as a repository of talent, which was exhibited both in the exhibition arena as well as on the stage. Over 20 country pavilions were set-up displaying their national heritage and all the visitors were treated for mouth-watering food from different countries.

Held every year under the patronage of the Founder President, Board of Governors of GMU, Thumbay Moideen, GMU–GMCH Annual Global Day serves as a platform for students to show the essence of their ethnicity and respective cultures through entertainment comprising songs, dance performances and skits. Various competitions were held in solo and group singing, group dances, cultural dress, talent and fashion shows.

Theevening of cultural extravaganza was graced by the Chief Guest Prof Gita Ashok Raj, Provost and senior academic leadership of the university. Ahmed Hajee Mohiudeen Chairman BA Group India and B. Abdulla Kunhi from India were special guests on the occasion. Prof Gita Ashok Raj inaugurated the festival and toured the country pavilions. She was all praise for the talent displayed by the students. She said that the Global Day brings together students, faculty, staff and their families together to celebrate Unity in Diversity.

This year’s event witnessed a special skit enacted by senior faculty and staff members called ‘Doctor’s Paradise’. The acting talent of the teachers and staff came to the fore, who otherwise are busy in their teaching and training schedule.

Later the Chief Guest conducted the raffle draw and distributed prizes to the winners. Management of GMU sponsored IPhone5C, iPad Mini, and Home-Theatre System, 32” T.V. and a lot of consolation prizes sponsored by Body and Soul Health Club and Spa and the ZoandMo Opticals were given away in the raffle draw. Thumbay Group UAE was the main sponsor of the event.

UAE, India, Pakistan, Egypt, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Palestine, South Africa, Syria, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh set-up country pavilions at the festival.

Prof Gita Ashok Raj gave away the prizes to the winners of fashion show, talent show and country performances.

Stall Prizes: 1st place: Iraq, 2nd Place: Saudi Arabia and 3rd Place: UAE
Country Performances: 1st place: India, 2nd place: Nigeria, and 3rd place: UAE

Ranganai Kusangaya of Saudi Arabia walked away with the Ethnic trophy while Mohammad Maen Rashed of Jordan was in 2nd place and Oscar Chidiebere Ehirim from Nigeria got 3rd place

Zain Mousa Al Shanableh of Jordan was selected as Ethnic 2014, while Lena Mohammed from Iraq was second and Amna Saeed of UAE got third prize.
