Mangalore, Jun 15: To protect the interest of the fishermen and to safeguard the fishes during their breeding season, a 57-day ban will  begin on Thursday June 15 and will continue till August 10 in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. 

The ban has been introduced under the Karnataka Coastal (Prevention) Act of 1986, stated a press release. However, deep sea fishing mechanised boats (multi day deep sea trawlers) are allowed to operate from August 3 but are permitted to enter the ports only after August 10.

In Uttara Kannada district, the ban will be imposed only till July 29, for a period of 45 days. During the ban period, traditional boats and HP boats with IBM and OBM machines may continue to fish.

Those who violate the ban will be penalised and will not be eligible for subsidised diesel and central excise tax for a year, said the release.
