United Nations, May 14 (IANS): UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said that he believed the Geneva Communique will continue its efforts to bring peace and stability to the war-torn country.
Brahimi, who will step down from his post May 31, made the statement Tuesday after his last briefing to the UN Security Council in a closed meeting as the UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria, Xinhua reported.
"The Geneva Communique will continue to be the centrepiece in the international efforts to bring an early end to the Syrian crisis. The Syrian people have shown incredible resilience and dignity through the ongoing crisis," Brahimi said.
During the briefing, Brahimi expressed his belief in what he called a "new Syria."
The Geneva Communique, also known as Geneva II Conference on Syria, is an international peace conference on the future of Syria with the aim of ending the Syrian civil war, by bringing together the Syrian government and the opposition to discuss the formation of a transitional government with full executive powers.
The Geneva Communique was adopted after the first international meeting on Syria June 30, 2012.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Tuesday announced resignation of Brahimi as the joint UN-Arab League special representative on the Syria crisis, terming it a "tragedy for the Syrian people" and a "failure" for the UN.
"For nearly two years, Brahimi had sought an end to the brutal and still worsening civil war in Syria. Indeed, the 80-year-old Algerian diplomat has faced almost impossible odds," Ban said.
Brahimi, who was appointed on Aug 17, 2012, took over the peace-facilitation role played by former UN secretary general Kofi Annan.
