Beltangady, Jul 16: Tension gripped Nainad on Saturday after the incident of desecration of a holy cross was reported.

A cross which was erected in 1983 in Park Land here was desecrated by a group of miscreants on Friday night.

The miscreants planted a saffron flag on the cross. Further they also damaged the cross with a sharp metal instrument and had the ‘Om’ symbol painted on the cross.

On noticing this on Saturday morning people from two religious communities gathered and commotion arose. Immediately the Beltangady circle inspector Subashchandra S and SI K K Ramakrishna lead a team of cops to the spot and dispersed the crowd.

Later under the leadership of Nainad church parish priest and the Zilla Panchayat member Thungappa a peace meet was organized wherein it was decide to reinstall the cross.

With this decision, the situation returned to normalcy.
