Mangalore, Jul 18: The police achieved a major breakthrough in the mysterious murder case of Ulaibettu GP member Puttu Monu by arresting the prime accused Sahul Hameed at Badriyanagar near Pavoor on Sunday July 16 night. Sahul was arrested by HighwaySquad police.
However, the other accused, Yakoob is still at large and the police have taken steps to nab him too. Sahul was arrested from his wife's house at Badriyanagar by police led by DySP Mitra Heraje.
The police were able to track down Sahul based on the mobile phone of Puttu Monu which was sold to a certain person by Sahul after the murder. The initial enquiry revealed that Sahul alias Ammi had taken Puttu Monu on his mobike from State Bank area here on July 8 afternoon. Thereafter Puttu Monu had gone missing and it was only on Saturday July 15 that his body was found in decomposed state on a hillock Bangara Gudde near Mudipu.
The police sources also said that some professional rowdies have been used in the murder and they have been absconding in Bangalore after the murder. Accordingly, a police team has gone to Bangalore for further investigation.
Though it is not yet established that Puttu Monu was either directly or indirectly murdered by Sahul, the existing clues point a clear finger against the latter in the present case. Sahul had married thrice and it is said that he was involved in sandalwood smuggling too for sometime.
