Bangalore, Jul 18: Women corporators from Mangalore staged dharna in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue near the Vidhana Soudha on Tuesday July 18 protesting the governments' decision to change the criteria for the mayoral elections.
The women corporators Hilda Alva, Kavita Sanil, Vijaya Arun and others shouted slogans against the anti-women strategy adopted by the state government in all administerial issues. They said that the government has meted injustice to 3 crore women of the state by changing the reservation of the mayoral election for the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).
As reported earlier the state government had changed the reservation criteria for the mayoral post to general category from general lady category and the criteria for deputy mayor's post was changed to general women from backward classes (A). The Dakshina Kannada in-charge minister B Nagraj Shetty is said to have played a major role in changing the reservation criteria.
