Fest to revive western music in Kolkata

Kolkata, Jun 17 (IANS): A youth-centric festival will resuscitate the Western music culture in Kolkata and will include live performances, competitions and talk shows.

The first Yuva Music Festival starting Tuesday, will continue till Aug 5. The fest will focus on the finer aspects of western music, through piano, guitar, keyboard recitals and vocals as well as band competitions.

Organised jointly by the Academy for Musical Excellence (AMEC), Alliance Francaise (Bengal chapter) and Uncommon, the event will encompass classical, pop and rock versions of the music form.

"After the 1980s the practice of western music waned in Kolkata. We are trying to revive the concept and nurture new talents irrespective of their financial background," AMEC founder Surendranath Majumdar told IANS.

He said special slots have been earmarked for the underprivileged children to showcase their talents.

"You hear Bollywood songs, the music is western though, the language is Hindi. The concept of harmony came from western music," he said.
