Mangalore, Jul 20: A condolence meeting for Yakshagana stalwart Sheni Gopalakrishna Bhat, who passed away on Tuesday July 18, was held at the SDM Law College here on Wednesday July 19. The meeting was organized by Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Parishat.

K M Kaveriappa, vice-chancellor of Mangalore University presided over the function.

Referring to Sheni as a national-level artiste, senior Tulu folklorist and scholar Amrut Someshwar said that many of Sheni’s unpublished works need to be published.

M Prabhakar Joshi, Yakshagana critic, said Sheni was a prodigy and his knowledge paved the way for this art form to attain new heights.

Kaveriappa said owing to lack of funds, the university was not in a position to offer research and training activities, but would very much intend doing so, if sponsors would come forward.

Yakshagana songs were sung as tribute to the great performer.
