Mangalore: Traffic changes at Bendore cause two accidents, chaos ensues

Mangalore, Jul 3: Two accidents occurred in quick succession on Thursday July 3 near St Agnes College, Bendore in the city, and in both cases, the locals blamed the changes recently made in the movement of traffic on this stretch.

In addition to some other roads, the road leading to Bendorewell Circle from St Agnes was also converted into one-way road since June 30. This road has two lanes with a divider in between. As no oncoming traffic is now allowed on this road, vehicles use both the lanes for moving towards Bendorewell Circle.

Near Kumar's International Hotel, there is a road deviating to the right. At this turn, there is no road divider, to facilitate vehicles to take a turn and move on this road. A Renault Duster car which was moving towards Bendorewell Circle on this road took right turn at this point, but was instantly hit by a Maruti 800 car that was moving parrellel to the Duster on the other lane. Both the vehicles were damaged in the accident.

Immediately thereafter, a motor bike turned right here and was hit by a KSRTC bus moving on the other lane. The injured bike rider, identified as Mangal Kumar (54) working for telephone exchange, was shifted to Colaco Hospital for treatment.

These accidents occurred because of the fact that no barricades were put up at this point to stop vehicles from taking a right turn, even after enforcing one-way traffic. The policemen have since placed barricades to avoid further accidents.

Traffic on the road got blocked for about 30 minutes as a result, before the policemen came on the scene and cleared the vehicles. Stranded locals got into a heated argument with police personnel over the problems faced by them. A D Nagaraj, traffic police sub-inspector, oversaw operations to restore normalcy.

It is learnt that cases have been registered in both the above accidents.

In case the authorities have opted to make the bendore road a one way , then in such case they should have first got rid of the divider and had marked lanes so that vehicles could freely change lanes as desired and avoid these accidents. I hope this plan is revisited.

I do not know if the new system is good..they could have installed traffic lights at shoppin junction,Bendorewell n Kankanady before resorting to this drastic step..fuel consumption in these expensive era and pollution also should have been considered.the round about takes more fuel..and increases pollution.most important its difficult in our place..as people have absolutely no lane discipline..in Hampankatta its ok..no hospitals or schools are on the way of signal free roads..please revert this change..its no good.

This one-way is a very good move. Good Job Traffic team.
This will reduce accidents and surely the fear of heavy vehicles colliding us head-on.
Speed breakers should be in place at all junctions.
    Ensure drivers follow traffic rules
Stop talking on mobile while driving (which is common now)

The bus cartels are the bully in our region. They want their ways and don't care whether making Collectors Gate to Horticultural Jn to Bendore well Jn to Collector's Gate as a big one way round-about is a feasible option or not.
In fact this experiment have eased the congested and traffic blocked Collector's Gate Jn and the Bendore well Jn.
Like in many metropolitan cities in the world, all the buses and lorries should not ply inside the city limits between 8 am and 8 pm instead there should be smaller attractive buses for inside-city routes with different colour for different inside-city routes.
The tourist buses, the inter city buses and the lorries should not enter the city limits between 8 am and 8 pm.
Always we should bring a change for better living condition of the citizens dwelling inside the city limits.
Convert the Hampankatta Bus Stand into a 12 feet height multi-storeyed Cellar and Ground floors for Inside-City bus stand with shopping complexes in the front. Convert the 9 feet height Basement floor for Auto-rickshaw and 2-wheeler Parking. And Convert 9 feet height multi-level upper floors into paid car parking.
In future the cars, autos and bikes should not be allowed to park on the side of any roads that blocks the free flow of traffic.
Identify MUDA land and create more multi-level car, auto-rickshaw and 2-wheeler parking buildings.
    Jai Kudla & Jai Hind!

Guess everything done is for the better, traffic is now moving smoothly, Understand there were a few accidents, but that is solved by the barricades, (I too got almost rammed by a speeding bus at the same spot) and yes, I have to go all around to come to bendore, but if everyone follows the rules (its made "one way" 24 hrs) then all will be smooth running!!!.BTW there are no road-jams in Balmatta now!!!

    Sir,

for you it is easier to say no traffic jams. residents staying in Balmatta / Bendoorwell area only know the trouble they are facing because of ONE WAY. between 8PM to 7AM people take their vehicles into the one way and cause lot of congestion. buses, cars, two wheelers do not follow rules between 8PM to 7AM and people around the area find it very difficult driving / riding.

It is better the District Administration go back to the old traffic routes.

Its really difficult to drive when busses threaten to walk over u in case u are on their racing track . It shows that these buses have no responsibility towards any one and their public service motive is more over not to be seen.im happy to see the traffic regulations improving , in the beginning ppl will resist but later ppl will get used to it .

This new change has made it better for the buses to race from bendore well to Balmatta and the bus drivers keep on honking thinking that they are Lords and the slaves should move to the side. The honking problem has become worse now cos of racing. The two wheelers still dont follow the one way direction thereby creating problems for everyone. Its really a round about route. Again from bendore if you have to go to Vas Lane again one has to cut across from Mlore nursing home and again vehicles are zooming left and right - some more scope for accidents. They announced the change in the paper the day the change was implemented. They could've at least advised same before with proper sign boards so that people are aware of same.

In-case if we are talking about planning then whole Mangalore roads needs to have re look and when it comes to following rules every body is on the wrong side even the pedestrians who just cross road ,bikers ,four wheeler ,auto ,buses who like to take right and left suddenly.Regarding safety signs whole Mangalore is managed badly not only Bendor circle .You will see all sorts of work going on the road without and sign boards

this traffic diversion is a fool's thought. no proper planning , no proper communication signs. my business is severely affected. the situation looks like a highway traffic within a city... first remove the divider's and lay footpath, then only you can make it as one - way. helping traffic by closing down our businesses is crime, and law/court will intervene if not public's anger.

This is Mr. J R Lobo's idea, no sense in this change at all. Without anyone ready like you do not have proper signboards from day one. For instance when you come out from Vaz lane near the Balmatta post off. there is no sign board no right turn, hence if people are not aware will go till Bendorewell and be sent back to take a round trip. Infact this happened to me when I had to go to Benborewell I was sent back to take a round trip. The police should make these roads no parking totally. This new idea is a big JOKE....!!!

Absolutely no traffic management skill. I wonder the crazy brain behind all this.

Before enforcing this crazy plan sign boards should have been placed all certain points. Nothing such has been done except erecting barricades at junctions and manned by traffic cops.Traffic was smoother before than the present chaos at certain junctions.

Bendore well and Karavali circle always takes the brunt. So whether you divert Balmatta traffic via SCS Hospital and Colaco Hospital makes no sense at all.The old system itself was better and smoother.

The new system will create alot of accidents and death. But who will take the responsibility, Mr.J.R.Lobo or the Commissioner of Police or both ? In the meanwhile how much money has been spent on making new metal barricades etc ?

Dear Mr.Police Commissioner, Please revert to the old system itself. Whatever you do the traffic problem will not ease at Bendore Well and Karavali Circle during peak hours. The only solution now is to plan a flyover from bendorewell to Kankanady by-pass road.

Whatever traffic was normally flowing on Balmatta - Bendorewell road has now shifted to SCS - Colaco Hospital road creating additional burden on that road. Adding to it, a builder is constructing 2 huge buildings near Colaco Hospital and the cement trucks are also parked on lower bendore road.

I agree with many of you and also Roshan Patrao who highlighted there were many more actions to be acted upon which could have reduced traffic problem.

    1. city busses stopping their busses on their mercy. On the road, middle of the road, any where, stopping the traffic all of sudden... they act owners of the road. Stop this first. Ensure bus stops only at bus stop and also properly, inside the stop area.

    2. Then and there fine all the vehicles parked on the road, no parking zones, waiting for the passengers ( with out properly sideing the vehicle )... penalize them on the spot.

    3. Move all those bus stops which are blocking the junctions. there are many... In front of the Vas Bakery near Balmatta, In front of Mangalore Nursing home, karangalpady, KS Rao road near Karnatake bank, near Ocean Pearl hotel... all these bus stops are exactly at a junction. these contributes a lot of problem to the traffic.

    4. Make one way very strict. There should not be any joker coming from the otherside. Penalise his on the spot.

    5. Clear all those shops which borned on the foot paths. There are many. All the foot paths are occupied by these jokers and people have to walk on the road instead of footpath. Clear all of them.

    6. Best example is near old Ideal Ice cream ( Laxmi Stores ), nobody knows whether it's a legal bus stop or not. I understand it's not a pick up point, but all the busses pick up passengers here. More over most of the passengers assume this is the right bus stop for them. If there is a police guy standing, busses go straight. if there is no police, it's considered as a valid bus stop.
Same way at Hampankatta also ( opp to KMC towards Tagore park).. there also same issue, nobody knows whether it's a proper bus stop or just a pick up spot if there is no police.

There are so many steps which can be adopted to clear the traffic in Mangalore.

The Aministration has done this with good intention to avoid Traffic jams normally scene in Kankanady-Balmatta area. But some problem really persists.
    # The accidents occurs in right lane where once it was reserved for coming traffic now left to going one. In case if the vehicle is Left lane & has to turn right, he shifts to right clashing with right lane traffic.
    # The scene of Traffic Police near Theresa School junction, makes feel to drivers(not aware of this deviation) to take left lane only. Naturally he get confused further when vehicle come also in right lane.
    # If the traffic is heavy in Left lane there will tendency to go to right lane, which creates confusion & congestions.

Some proper planning is required in this regard, as though this plan is good, looks more of confusion.

Some funny things with present situation,
    # If your want to go to ESI Hospital Rd from Kankanady, or go to Shanthi Church from Jyothi, you'll have to take a big round.
    # In some place like Bendoorwell Circle, the area seems bottle neck as wide road narrows.
    # Anywhere if you miss a parking lot for 4 wheelers, & if want to try again, take a big round.
Clearly shows lack of planning in this system.

Much thinking and homework surely has not been done by the traffic police regarding this new arrangement. I would like to ask the police authorities why they have not shifted bus stops which really caused traffic bottlenecks. For instance the Collectors Gate bus-stop can be shifted to a more ideal place little beyond in the same road near Post Office or so, Or even that bus-stop would have been completely removed. Similarly Balmatta Bus Stop can be shifted to Skyline Arcade(Souza Arcade). The only inconvenience would have been to people is that they have to walk a little.Footpaths are also in place. The shops too would have had more customers.
Without these kind of plans and when the city is growing only short term quick-fixes will cause more hardships to people.
The present arrangement looks very funny. The other day double lanes were made. Today all have been converted into one-ways. Doesn't it look foolish. The Bays are created to misuse the funds only according to me. Buses do not go into the Bays at all. Since they are made of some plastic material after one month have a look at them! Bus drivers will move their buses on them.
What thinking has gone into these arrangements is very clear.

Actually they made this change for public sake since heavy traffic all the time. Public should follow the traffic rules, but all are in hurry, no one willing to give way to others specially these auto drivers and 2wheelrs are creating problems. You should see where ever train gates are both left and right side vehicle are parked after train moves its difficult to move vehicles since both sides left and right sides are blocked. no one follows the rules, in this matter we can not blame police.

Drivers should be observant whilst driving when they see something has changed from the daily traffic that was moving earlier - like when they see one way traffic on both roads which previously was for two way traffic. You are not a good driver if you are not observant & just drive blindly.
Of course, Police should publish in news papers\TV the major changes in traffic at least a couple of days earlier so that the road users are aware of the changes.
In India these things are not done and overnight they change the directions of movement of traffic causing accidents. There should be sufficient number of traffic police stationed to guide the motorists for a couple of days after the changes have taken place (expecting that some drivers cannot read written signs).
This kind of apathy prevails in every Government organisation but in traffic it takes\injures lives.
    Please work for the people.

There is no proper planning done for the change in traffic diversion.

Buses are to be blamed for the blocks in Mangalore City and most of the buildings do not have proper car parking facility. All car parks are sold / converted into shops and owners / customers park their vehicles on roads.

Driving on our roads is a nightmare thanks to the RTO and traffic police. The only thing our traffic police (including the SIs) know is booking cases on hapless vehicle users. They turn a blind eye to buses picking up passengers at the wrong places and autorickshaws parked at will. Anyone standing at Bendorewell junction (Mangalore Gate building) will notice that all buses plying towards Pumpwell stop right in front of the Mangalore Gate building while the bus stand is further down opposite the Corporation Bank. If you look around you’ll see the traffic constables and SIs sitting in the shade of the tree or chatting over the mobile. If you come to the Kankanady circle you’ll see buses approaching from Pumpwell pick and passengers opposite Lawrence Sequeira’s shop causing traffic jam till Yenepoya Nursing Home. The actual bus stop is opposite St. Joseph High School on the other side of the circle and the traffic police standing at the circle would be hiding behind some auto rickshaw. My repeated requests to the Traffic Police to regulate traffic at these two points has fallen on deaf ears. After all this is India and the taxpayer is not supposed to ask why his tax is being misused.

First of all, these diversions and one ways have created more problems for traffic. The one who has to travel 200 meters, will have to travel 2 kilometers to reach their destination. For Instant, One who comes from Shanti Nilaya Road and wants to go to Mayur Lodge, Swagath, Samakdine etc., Coming out from Shanti Nilaya Road, travel towards Jyothi, take a U turn travel all the way balmatta, pass SCS hospital and then take a right turn go upto bendoorwell and then take a right turn then travel towards their destination.

Same thing with those who are coming form Kankanady or Pumpwell side whose destination for instant is Kunil Complex, will have to travel strait towards Balmatta, then take a right turn towards SCS hospital, then take a right turn again towards bendoorwell, thus making vehicle to travel long distance to reach their short destinations and spend more on fuel. It is making traffic to be on the run more and more traffic on the road.
The need of the hour is "Smart Signals" only which will ease the traffic and reduce the Police efforts so that they can curb other traffic offenses i.e., "SHRILL HORNS" mainly.

Bus drivers are not even bothered to stop the buses where it it marked to stop. They will stop where public is waiting. And the public is gathered where they feel good. No body is bothered about simple rules.

Actually a working traffic signal at the bendore well junction would have served the purpose - till an underpass or over pass is built. the Present system needs to be reversed immediately or replaced with a traffic signal system. I was travelling from hampankatta last night and even the dividers blocking the Gokul Market Road from the milagres road were moved by commuters and two wheelers were happily crossing - very hazardous for them when vehicles are moving at high speed on the road to light house hill or going towards clock tower. However there is no one to prevent this. On the st. Agnes road, even aw people like us were following the rules and going the way we shoud, people were travelling at high speed in opposite directions. Who will take responsibility for loss of life or injury. There is nobody to guide or observe or prevent such things from happening after 8 PM, when most people are on 8 Pm.
And what about the extra fuel charges for residents on that road or loss of business for people who operate on those roads. Have they been considered? I do hope that good sense will prevail the new system will be reversed immediately.

I hold both police and public responsible for these problems. Police also, when such new rules applied, they should ensure all related action items are addressed. All precautionary measures are taken. then only apply such a drastic change. But our people are more problamatic. We are like looking for loop holes to escape. If there is a open place, knowing other side is one way , why should we try to take turn ? If unknowingly , then it's ok. but by seeing the crowd of mangalore and the way they drive, I am sure it's just negligence which always creates problems. Especially there 2 wheelers, they drive any where, any how, they just need a place to enter their front wheel, that's it they are done entering, irrespective other person or vehicle whether any damage or they are in trouble...nothing. So, first we the people need to mature ourselves to adopt these changes.
