Mangalore: Brazen robbery attempt at Kinnigoli – dog killed, three tied up

Sunil Bangera
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 4: In a late night operation, a gang of five entered a house located on the main road of Kinnigoli in the district on Thursday July 3. They killed the dog that was guarding the house, before entering the home and gagging and tying the hands and legs of three occupants of the house. The gang also ransacked the house in an attempt to rob valuables. The incident came to light at daybreak on Friday July 4.

The robbers targetted a house bearing the name, 'Love Paradise' located by the side of Rotary Bhavan that is under construction near Bhattakody on main road at Kinnigoli. An old lady living in the house named Stephania D'Souza, and her neighbours, Jacintha Noronha and Jacinha's son, Claude Noronha, both of whom used to stay with the lady during the nights, suffered at the hands of the intruders. All of them were treated at a hospital.

The house in question is owned by Ronald D'Souza, who works in a foreign country. Ronald's grandmother, Stephania (95), happens to be a retired teacher. She lives alone at this house, Jacintha and Claude used to come to this house to give company to the old lady during the nights.

At around 1.30 am on Friday, a gang comprising five members suddenly entered the house from the rear entrance. The gang tied up all the three occupants of the house with the help of saris. Besides tying up their limbs, the gang stuffed clothes into their mouths, before sifting through the cupboards and almirahs in the house. Stephania said the robbers behaved with her rudely, by assaulting her in an attempt to extract information about gold and cash they thought had been stored at some secret place inside the house.

The men reportedly told the lady that they knew about the presence of over a hundred sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 40 lac in the form of currency notes in this house. As the robbers pulled and pushed the lady, her hands were injured. The robbers, who searched the purse of Stephania, took away a thousand rupees found in it. But somehow they failed to notice that a gold chain also was present inside the purse, the lady said.

The robbers had fed some poisonous food to the dog of the house, and after it died, tossed its carcass into the under-construction building nearby. They tied a white cloth around a closed circuit TV camera located in the front, and changed the direction of the backside CCTV camera, before entering the house. Those who were at the receiving end of this robbery attempt said that all the robbers were aged between 35 and 40 years, and that two of them spoke in Hindi, with two others conversing in Tulu, with the other one speaking in Kannada. The robbers continued their search from 1.30 am to 5 am, and exited from the house at 5 am after snatching away a gold chain found in the neck of the youth.

Stephania said that the robber who was speaking in Kannada offered her a hundred rupees out of a thousand rupees they had snatched from her purse, to get her injured hand treated. Before leaving, they released the three persons and offered water to them, it is gathered.

Mulky police visited the spot and began investigation. The sniffer dogs, after walking around the house, moved till the compound wall. A team of finger print experts also conducted verification. A person named Ganesh Padmanoor, who used to look after the affairs of the house, filed a complaint about this robbery attempt in Mulky police station. Stephania was discharged after being treated at Concetta Hospital Kinnigoli.

City commissioner, R Hitendra, deputy commissioner of police, Vishnuvardhan, assistant commissioner of police, Ravi Kumar, and inspector Ramachandra Nayak, visited the spot.

It is because of comments like these and such petty views that Mangloreans have a bad name.

If you aren't helping the situation, it's better to refrain from commenting, don't you think?

Looking at the posh multi storey bungalow and its interiors with lone senior citizen is an invitation to the robbers. What is the use of such pomp and vulgar display of wealth when no one is there to stay. May be a provision for retired days, which very few lucky only destined to live.

Bonglo asa, dudu asa but why only old lady in such a posh house? is it not a risk thing to keep her alone? it is high time to shift her to an old age home rather than keeping in bungalow with no security. Poor dog killed in between, hope this kind of incidences doesn't occur anymore.

CCTV camera's should be installed at good height so that no one could cover or turn them other directions..Also Main switch or Cut out should be installed inside the house only Energy meter out on the wall..While raining even dog bark hard neither people living in the house or neighbors can hear..since its a robbery it is difficult to stop..i m sure those robbers from vicinity they speak in Hindi just to misguide...

It was the belief that the robbers were targeting houses in the City. However it now appears that any place is good enough for them to conduct their operations.

Hope the culprits are apprehended and duly punished for the heinous crime.

It is good to see that Dakshina Kananda has a good Police Force and it is only a question of time before the perpetrators of this crime are all booked.

After Congress took over the state, thieves have a free hand & complete lawlessness in the state. Top Police officials are busy protesting among themselves. Underworld is ruling Mangalore & Udupi. In such a scenario, what can be the fate of a common man / senior citizens? CM & HM are utter failure in the state. CM is busy protecting his own chair, Congress is busy in discussing poll debacle than discussing about good governance/administration.

    Very Bad Indeed!!
In these days, In India.. Robbers are using their Brain, by killing dog at first place then changing the direction and blind folding camera. Smart Brain they have. They did their Math before going for the test and passed the exam...At least dozen times they might have did their trial test by passing thro' area.
BUT.. there some Spy Cameras which no robbers can detect but it can detect the robber’s full image those are in the form of electric switch or even like some other forms.
To DRAIN out this kind of Smart Brain doesn't take time..

You should appreciate your critics also. Criticizing people could be your well-wishers. It was my effort to ensure you are not justifying robbery in future by mistake also.

By the way, what I could think after reading this news (thanks to Daiji) is my old aged mother back home and take necessary precautions. If you are also like me, take some precautions back home please.

Meantime, disgusted by your justification of robbery in the name of price rise. I know why you justified (political reasons). But do not become 24X7 politician. Keep up your sensible comments, which you used to do long back.

It's Jacintha Aranha and Claudin Aranha not Noronha, who are neighbors across the road helping this old woman. Poor people they too had to go through it. This home had dogs since log years, there used to be a board outside "Nayigalive Echarike". Felt sad to hear such things happen in Kinnigoly now. As in other towns lot of outsiders now in Kinnigoly too. Can't blame the system, development has it's negative side.

I empathize with the granny and other victims who suffered at the hands of these goons, and the poor dog who had a painful death!!

At the outset such a sprawling attractively done house (with only one old lady) is a sure invitation for housebreakers on the prowl and seeing the grand house occupied just by an old person they might have assumed that they would definitely find some big booty in there!!

And I agree with Nancy, Belman and Ismal Perinje that rising prices which has a killer effect on the poverty stricken is one of the main reasons for such type of crimes!!

Poverty and crime have a very "intimate" relationship that has been described by experts from all fields, from sociologists to economists. The UN and the World Bank both rank crime high on the list of obstacles to a country’s development.

The chilren go to work either in or outside the country to earn their daily bread. If the elders are left alone, it looks bad if they are in the old age home, its still bad. If the family arranges for servants still there are instances where the caretakers had betrayed the families. Its very difficult to judge anybody. But its a good thing that thieves showed some mercy.

So sad... yes, we are going to worst from bad. But I wonder, there is something mentioned like "presence of over a hundred sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 40 lac in the form of currency notes in this house". Not sure what non sense is that. IF it's true and fact, it's stupid to have such a wealth at home. If it's not true and just a wrong assumption, then also it's dangerous as others think it's there at home. But I keep the children or family members of this old lady held responsible for this incident. How can they leave such an old lady along ? It's pay back time...
