Ujjain, Aug 27: A professor died after he and two of his colleagues were allegedly manhandled on Saturday by a group of students following cancellation of students' union election at a college in Ujjain, police said.

Professor Harbhajan Singh Sabharwal of Madhav College, who was supervising the election, was mobbed by agitating students, allegedly belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), after he had cancelled the polls following charges of irregularities.

Sabharwal, who reportedly had two bypass surgeries earlier, was pushed by some unidentified students following which he fell down and became unconscious.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead, Ujjain superintendent of police Jaideep Prasad has said.

After the scuffle, two more professors, identified as M L Srinath and Mittal, complained of uneasiness and were admitted to a hospital where their condition was reported to be stable.

An FIR was registered by a college peon who accompanied Sabharwal to the hospital, under Section 302 of IPC (murder) within Dewas Gate police station.

Police had registered an FIR in the case of alleged manhandling of Srinath and Mittal, Prasad said, adding probe was on to nab those responsible for the death of Sabharwal.
