Moscow, Sep 26 (IANS/ITAR -TASS): Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov Friday confirmed that his country is ready to support Iraq in its efforts to fight the Islamic State(IS) Sunni radical group.
Lavrov had a meeting with Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on the sidelines of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
"During the meeting, Lavrov confirmed Russia's support for Iraq's independence, territorial integrity and sovereignty," the ministry said.
Moscow was ready to continue supporting Iraq in its efforts in fighting the terrorist threat, Lavrov said.
The Iraqi prime minister thanked Russia for its solidarity with Baghdad, the statement noted.
