Udupi : Struggling to look after aged father, son kills him

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (RJP)

Udupi, Oct 2: A paralysed father was allegedly killed by his own son. The incident was only reported yesterday after the alleged act took place two weeks back in Charkadi, Kannar near Brahmavar.

As per police, the Vasu Nayka (75) was killed by his son Prakash on September 21. The father was buried on the next day.

Vasu Nayka had three daughters and a son. All daughters who were married lived separately. Prakash, the son was the last among the children. Vasu Nayka’s wife had passed away three years back. Prakash was married. But as per the reports, his wife has not been seen of late at his house. Only father and son lived together. It is alleged that the father being a paralysed patient, it became difficult for the son to look after him. And on the fateful day, he decided to end his father’s life by murdering him. The son knocked his fragile and weak father to the ground to kill him.
Prasanni the daughter of the deceased is the complainant in this case.

The police have taken the accused into custody and have identified the place where the deceased was buried. The post mortem will be conducted today.

Brahmavar police are investigating. More facts are awaited.

I don't think any father would kill paralyzed or disable son/daughter. Therefore, why son would kill the father. The daughter who has complaint should be investigated first. There may be property issues between siblings... who knows. If that daughter is so much concerned her father, she should make some arrangement to take care of of the father...

All you there commentators,do you know what it is to lookafter a paralysed MAN!?if the Person is heavy ,to Nurse him ,clean, feed day out and day in 24hours of the day.I am not supporting the son what he has done if at all.But I doubt it is not what we all think like "killer" It can happen when the Person is complete paralysed and aheavy Person,he might have just slipped off and fell down and died.we should not make the son responsible what had happened. In this case Ipity the son what has happened.of course the deceased one too.but the daughter has the Courage to say and complain about the brother.where she was and her sisters all the time?why she didnt takeup his care to release her brother?is there some property in visier? The wife of Prakash must have slipped off to avoid the duty.I must appriciate the son atleast he looked after father for the time being without any help of women(sister, wife)and didnt push up in home for the aged.Prakash, whatever happened dont worry,if you ahve killed your father it was not correct, may God forgive you .May be he had to care his mother too.we dont know.May the Soul of deceased rest in peace. And what postmartum will bring now? There was nobody to help this prakash?Hope he wont get hard punishment.

    hey India first,

In Karnataka 'Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964' governs the slaughter of cattle in the state. Slaughter of cow, calf of a cow (male or female) or calf of a she-buffalo totally prohibited.

In Brahmavara Karnataka Killing of father allowed.

Very sad to hear this news that son killed the father.I wonder why the daughters did not take care of their father, as the history says girls love father more than sons.I wish one of the daughters
would have taken care of their aged father. How come the daughters had no heart or love to take care of their old father. Children will not understand the importance of parents when they are alive.May his soul rest in peace.

God rest the Father's Soul rest in peace.
Now with an assumption that the Son killed his Father.
    1. Who knows what emotions Mr Prakash went through while killing his Father..Maybe, as a man who loved his father, he could not bear to see the state of his Father for the time period of Paralysis, Post Paralysis depression is not uncommon for the patient, and maybe Mr. Vasu had been suffering post paralysis, Soiling himself involuntarily, unable to take a bath, or eat or sleep, refusing medications.. etc. For the period of time that the Son took care of his father, each day would have dragged on, eating away at him... like a fly with its wings being pulled off, The daughters were far away from the Father and not knowing the difficulties of Prakash...It is a trying time for a person who has to look after stroke and Paralysis patients.
the risk of overmedication, Infection, Bedsores, General vulnerability, poor nutrition, depression and irritability of a post paralysis patient is very hard to bear... especially if a person has to do it alone, everyday is a challenge, and it takes a strong heart to do it, NGOs and Care homes are least bothered about what a person is going through, they have a set budget per patient.
I do not encourage what Mr. Prakash has probably done, but in his mind, what other choice did he have is what he would have justified himself with.

    Dear Satya and Allwyn Mangalore,
You guys have a habit of just pinning someone down with your prejudiced thinking. Where in my comment I have said that if at all Prakash had killed his father, and justified his killing. I still believe that he did not kill his father. I was just pointing at his state of mind at this hour when people accuse him of murdering his father. Why the hell cant you people wait until the truth comes out. If it turns out that he indeed killed his father, then you guys are free to pass your verdict on him.
Bye the way, I don't need to learn from you or Alwyn how to look after my parents. God has given me wonderful parents and I am one of those who will remain indebted to them.

    Satya,

Again, I am not supporting Prakash'a act IF he indeed killed his dad. As Vijay and Rita said (hope you read their comments)you have no clue about taking care of a paralysed patient. Your justification of comparing that his parents took care of him holds no value here. You do not take care of your parents because they took care of you, you can take care of anyone even if they have not taken care of you. Don't you think your logic applies to those 3 daughters too? We dot know how what is Prakash's physique nor his father's. What if Prakash is weak and his father is obese?? Have you ever seen a baby who is heavier than parents (and you said both parents) You can shout at your child if they do not listen, can you shout at your father if he refuses to listen to you for some reason? Depression is a taboo in India to talk about and hence you do not have any clue what depression can do for one. There may be a lot of things that we do not know at the moments about this and surely there will be more that we will never know about this incident.Understanding what might have went through Prakash's mind is something that no one can imagine. We should not just pass on comments when we know only half story.

It is not correct to blame the son, entirely. True that murder is not the solution but we must scrutinize the situation the son is in too.

All of us will agree that a lot of efforts are required to look after a paralytic patient. It requires cooperation from more than one person whereas this man was left alone to take care of everything from food to cleanliness to medical attention. He may not be in a position to go to work too which left him with no income and if he went to work, it left him with little time to look after the father with no rest to himself.

Its pathetic of all female members (his wife as well as three sisters) to have abandoned the father and left the man alone to tend for the patient.

I hope leniency will applied while studying this case.

    Mr. Shivappa,

Your apprehension displays that you know something - at-least that the son has not done this. In which case, you also may be know who has done this.

Nevertheless, readers of DW are to believe what is reported in the news here. Its understandable that a person who met natural death is mourned publicly and laid to rest.

The fact that a member of the family has a difference of opinion itself indicates that the death was not natural.

Your valuable input will save the son from a hell of experience from the legal authorities.

No Lydia, I know nothing of this case.
It was just a comment inspired by Stan's comment earlier. That's all.
    right now everything is speculation.
I don't want to 'convict' anybody before trial unlike many here who are passing the verdict.

    Vellano1,

When a discussion came up about EUTHANASIA to Renuka Shanubhag, I openly opposed because its the hospital that was responsible for the tragic trauma caused to the nurse, hence, the hospital must sustain every penny to look after her till her end finally comes, though her living is equal to not.

I don't support killing of the father here but am asking to understand the position the son is in and am holding all those involved responsible, in creating such a situation for him to do what he did.

Punish all of them too for not fulfilling their duty, not only the son.
