Bengaluru: Women in car harassed, caught on camera

Bengaluru police arrest six for harassment of women

Updated

Bengaluru, Nov 25 (DHNS): The six men, who allegedly tried to forcefully enter a car with five women sitting inside near a well-known jewellery showroom on M G Road recently, have been arrested by the Cubbon Park police.

The suspects have been identified as Nagesh, a resident of Whitefield and a sales executive at a private firm, Harish, a driver from R T Nagar, Devaraj, a labourer from Whitefield, Kiran, a BA student from Hosur in Tamil Nadu, Satish, a driver, and Subramani, owner of a provision store. They are all aged between 22 and 26, City Police Commissioner M N Reddi said at a press conference on Tuesday.

According to the police, the five women—two of them married—had gone to a restaurant on Lavelle Road for dinner. The husbands of the married women accompanied them. The men then went to get their cars that were parked in a reputed club nearby. The women went to an ice cream parlour, along with a driver, in another car around 11.30 pm.

The police said that the driver parked the car near a jewellery showroom and went to the parlour to buy ice cream. Soon, a gang of six men approached the car and tried to open the door. One of the women locked the door from inside, while another clicked pictures of the men, the police added. The men stood near the car for a short time and went away, said the police. Later, the women lodged a complaint with the Cubbon Park police.

The police gathered details from the women and obtained the footage of CCTV cameras installed near the spot. During the verification of mobile phone calls, the police found that around 200 calls were generated at that time. During the scrutiny, the police tracked one of the numbers that led to the whereabouts of a suspect. Based on his inputs, they arrested the remaining five.

Investigators are interrogating the six men to ascertain why they indulged in such an act and if they were involved in similar offences in the past, Reddi added.

Bengaluru: Women in car harassed, caught on camera

Bengaluru, Nov 25 (PTI): In a nightmarish experience caught on camera, five women sitting in a car were stalked and harassed by unidentified men in the heart of the city with their screams for help going unnoticed.

The incident happened on Saturday around 11:30 pm when the women on a weekend outing stopped their car near an ice cream parlour on MG Road and found to their shock unidentified men trying to open the doors of their vehicle.

As they were seated inside waiting for their driver who had gone to pick up ice cream for them, the men stared at them, stood around the vehicle and tried to open the doors, according to the complaint lodged by one of the victims.

Police said according to the complaint, first, three men were seen staring at them and they were later joined by two others who tried to open the car door.

They even tried to open the door with an object on getting to know that the door was locked, the complaint said.

As the women started raising alarm by repeatedly screaming for help and honking, the men fled from the spot, police said.

The women even managed to take video of the men, which they have submitted to the police. The grainy video shows the men standing around and the women crying for help persistently.

DCP(Central) Sandeep Patil said their husbands were in a different car near the place where the incident happened. City police are on the lookout for culprits.

"....certain sections have been invoked like stalking, criminal intimidation and outraging the modesty of the women. Let the investigation take place. Let us detect the case. Let us nab the culprits," City Police Commissioner M N Reddi told reporters here.

Black sleeved face coverings is a kind of attire which our Indian Penal Code has conferred to criminals as a privilege to save their esteem and self-respect anticipating acquittal in this harassment case. Crime is yet to be proved and our great law says “INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY”. Until then, law will protect their dignity.

I never encourage such rowdism or attack on women in the society. I grew up in Mangalore and enjoyed the full liberty and freedom of life without any ugly/bad incidents. Gone are the days.
Everyone knows that lots of bad incident are taking place and even government is slow in implementing powerful laws against these goondas.
What did I mean to say it is better to be cautious to avoid undue happenings whenever possible. You can feel fully assured that I never ever have any sympathy on such criminal, rogue guys.

I don't understand why people don't come out in bold and face the society while writing comments. Please mention your real name and place as requested by 'Daijiworld', it makes sense.

There are ladies write comments so boldly, one such is Ms. Lydia Lobo, Kadri. Hats off to you madam, I appreciate your boldness in commenting in many of the news in 'Daijiworld'. This is how we must fight by commenting our feelings.

Those people who wants to know the real name is just to know their religion. A secular commentator should not reveal his real name. A girl elope with other community boy or there is fight between two community people, most of the commentators are interested to know how the people react based on their religion. If all commentator started hiding their real name, then there will be drastic change in number of comments in Daijiworld.

During the last months I have often read in French and German newspapers that more and more women from Europe do not dare to go again to India as tourists though they like India so much. In interviews women had expressed their anxiety and fear to go, for example, alone to India and travel within India. There have been terrible assaults against women in India and the international media reported on them. The Indian government must find answers and implement solutions to protect women better.

If we don’t condemn this act now, very soon every child and women folk will be raped openly on the streets and in homes, already its going on where women are accosted and raped in the day at home and harassed on the roads in broad daylight. If not for yourself, stand up to benefit the women folk in your house. You will be thanked by the women reading your positive comments instead of starting debates on the portal.

The persons who has been caught and arrested are genuine !? , its almost impossible to reconstruct looks of a person with that low resolution camera footage . Police are in urgency to hush up the case , chances are that they fabricated the innocents . You can call it BANANA JUSTICE !.

Car door is been closed , they tried to open it , surrounded the vehicle . It may be a prank , but ' brave ' girls threatened ! but had enough courtesy to shoot the video !!. They may have got intimidated but episode Sounds mercky.

Men will always be men in society , come what may , they will not change their mindset. Its not too wise to venture out in midnight except in cases of emergency.

Also if group of men having a wild time at midnight on roads does not mean they are potential offenders. They have right to have good time. Of course girl also have right to venture out , but at her own risk .

In my opinion, in order to avoid such bad incidents ladies should stick or follow certain time limits after the sun set. Late hours still in the streets, naturally attract dangers from rowdies. Police or security personnel cannot guarantee safety or women round the clock. The situation would have been worse if they were threatened at the gun point.

Your opinion is none less than certain wise men pointing out that dress style (i.e. jeans) encourages rapists. In a way it implies that rape and rowdyism is alright. What if the women were out for some emergency instead of Ice-cream treat ? They would still have harassed ? Beyond all, what if they had not honked and raised alarm ? The men would have opened the car with the tool they had and very unfortunate would have happened ?

Should the Rowdies continue to exist or situation should be changed for women to be able to move about without fear ?

As long as people like Krishna exist, don't expect any changes in the mind set of people. His comments portray that the women out were of low character and asking for trouble. Don’t we have a right to be out and enjoy ourselves without the meddling and harassment from these men? Do we women harass men when they are out, we don’t even bother about them, then who gives the right to them to trouble women? Don’t blame the women, educate the men to respect women no matter what situation women are in.

Law and order should be made strict in karnataka. let our home minister take charge of this implementation, rather than giving interview that Bangalore is safe. This shows how safe we are. I don't think there is anything wrong in ladies taking a evening out with their friends. Problem is that we men need to change our thinking about women. We are all human beings and we should have the liberty and freedom to what a normal human being can do. Comments like Krishna, shows how idiotic our society is. As the ladies has the video coverage of the culprits, it will be easier for police force to nab the culprits. DEATH SENTENSE Should be pronouced on culprits. Or the responsible citizens of Bangalore should get hold of these culprits and kill them by throwing stone to them. Very pityful for the fate of kannadigas. George Saab, get up and do some meaningful work Sir.

What is this Krishna, Mangaluru. For the sake of your blind support to a political party, you sounds like BAAP OF MORAL POLICING.

If any Hindu outfits called for the protest against this incident you you should have written other way. Shame on you hypocrites.

Sir you can not compare Banglore to Mumbai. In Mumbai, women can walk on the street even at 2 oclock in the night....! Look at the train stations and its vicinity...

Should we blame rowdies parents for their goonda action ?

Dear Mr. Krishna, are you saying that the next time you leave your house vacant and someone robs it you wouldn't complain?..after all there is no use of blaming rowdies and goondas because you invited the trouble yourselves.

    Wasim,
Did I ask whether your religion supports rowdies or not? I Just asked whether you support rowdies or not. The answer is simple - Yes or No.

This is the problem with you fanatics always brings religion in between when there is nothing to defend. I am well aware that all the religions in the world would not support rowdies.

This is a good lesson to the ladies....It seems that their Parents / Teachers did not tell them-EARLY TO BED AND EARLY TO RISE IS A SIGN OF HEALTH.....there is no use of blaming rowdies and goondas because we are inviting the trouble ourselves.

    Excuse me, Mr. Krishna,

I am a strict follower of early to bed, early to rise but tell me, are rowdies nobody's sons ? Did their parents not teach them that roaming jobless on streets, troubling women, is not correct ?

PM Modi is so right - he asked 'we have all restrictions to our daughters - have we ever questioned our sons, where they were, why they are so late to return home ?'

You may have read in the news that the women were in a vehicle, their husbands were in another vehicle. Do you mean that the IT city that is catering to Western Business world, goes motionless after 8 or 9 O'clock ?

Too wise of the ladies to have taken a video. Let the police get one clue - the entire gang will be nabbed !

Unfortunate thing is Siddu is still supporting useless mallu minister who is doing nothing. Atleast he can replace this useless minister with some one efficient.

Search and lock these roadside romeos in jail for at least six months. Above all, and most importantly, publish their photos in the local dailies. Humiliation, probably, will refrain them from venturing into the kind of 'bachhali' act.
