Bantwal, Dec 12: This particular ATM machine was very benevolent for some time compared to other ATM machines. It gave out Rs 500 notes whenever the consumer wanted Rs 100.

The period it behaved differently was between August 20 and November 7, 2014. The place was the ATM kiosk belonging to a nationalized bank on Vittal school road in Vittal here.

The bank management surely noticed this mistake in its closing accounts in the form of a shortage. From the first day, the management was aware that something was wrong without exactly knowing what. It took them many days to know the behavioural pattern of the ATM.

When ultimately they found out about the special benevolence of the ATM, they had already suffered a loss of Rs 1,20,000. The ATM machine itself did not commit any mistake on its own. It was the mistake of the person who fed the trays containing currency notes. He put Rs 500 notes in the tray intended to store Rs 100.

Bankers hardly admit mistakes. In the small town of Vittal, people know one another very well. Now the staff of the company responsible for filling cash in the ATM kiosk has prepared the database of persons who withdrew money during the particular period.

The persons who withdrew 'extra' cash are being approached to return that money which the ATM had given them. The ATM users who never complained about the issue and who had happily pocketed the cash, are getting ready to cough up the easy earned money.
