Mangaluru, Dec 14: People during the day hardly go out unless it is absolutely necessary. They have completely stopped venturing out after dusk. They are spending sleepless nights. All out of fear of a leopard on prowl.

This is the situation prevailing right now in the Paladka area of Moodbidri for the past one week.

The school children from the village of Kemar, Kadthimar do not want to go to school at all. The village has around 20 houses of people who are involved in farming activities.

On last Monday, two cows belonging to Sudhakar Poojary of Kemar, Kadthimar were attacked. One of them was killed in the attack and another was injured.

In another incident,a dog belonging to Hosamane Nellaka has been injured on its neck.

A Paladka resident Praveen has spotted a leopard while he was riding a bike.

Another resident has claimed that he has spotted two leopards on a rock in the village.

Sundar Naik from Kemar, Kadthimar has lost a dog to the leopard.

A leopard was said to have appeared at the house of Janaki on December 8. It appeared on the terrace of the house in the morning. Later it was driven away by the villagers.

Shankar has also lost some dogs to the leopard. Some leopard marks can be seen on the walls of his house.

Babu from Jodukatte has lost a cow and his neighbour Augustine's cow has been missing from December 11. The leopard has left its mark even on the place where the dead cow was buried. The marks on the soil confirms that it viisted the spot again.

The night vigil at the farms and the visits to the farms for irrigation purposes have been completely stopped now.

The terror of wild animals is not new in the area. But the recent news of leopard appearance has worsened the situation. And to make the matter worse, even wild pigs have been creating trouble at night.A local scribe has suffered some damages to his bike while he encountered the pigs.

Kinnigoli area had experienced the same terror three months back which was contained later with the aid of CCTV cameras.

"The leopard being spotted could be the mother of the leopard caught last year at Kallamandkur. We have taken measures to catch the leopard, especially with the help of the traps. More forest personnel will also be deployed. We are also filing report in time to speed up the compensation process." said B D Dinesh, area forest officer in Moodbidri speaking to the media.

A student has said that the teachers from the school have been dropping them home by car.

The residents have complained to all possible authorities to relieve them from the horror.

Instead of awarding the Rohtak sisters with gallantry awards whose heroism has been put in doubts after new surfacing videos, the same should be awarded to this brave brave dog and cow who escaped the jaws of death with such heroism

There are few comments supporting the animal attacks and also they mention even animals have rights to live on earth. Yes, I do agree. It was same statements by people for animals when some wild dogs killed few infants and kids in Bangalore. How many of you will be on same stand if your own kids are pulled away from you and killed by these wild animals in front of your eyes. Just close your eyes and imagine, your loved ones are attacked and killed by these wild animals. Still u will be on same stand ? If such situation as you are seeing your loved one are getting pulled away by a wild leopard and if you are given a pistol to shoot the animal. Will you still think as even that wild animal has it's right to attack and eat a human being or you will blindly shot that animal and save your loved one. That's the difference. Everybody knows these wild animals also has rights to live. But not at the cost of impacting human lives or killing the cows and threatening the normal life of that place. So before writing all those like should not kill those animals, even they have rights etc etc. assume it's happened with your life and loved ones and then comment.

Sir, the only difference is we have readymade chicken stalls and fish market. For leopard there is no market. When hunger causes pain in its stomach, its only thought is to find prey. It does not know which prey chicken or mutton is whose sister or mother, or brother in law.

It is strange that leopards are coming to the living area of People instead of hunting wild pigs. They have a taste!who informed them that cow slaughtering will come to protest from certain Groups?and thought there must be enough for us also.It really causes lot of loss and whole living is going out of order due to These animals. Why does the forest officers are not taking precautions in advance?when the populations of These animals are taken upper Hand, must see that some of them to catch with Shooting with anesthetic method and either in zoo or elsewhere. Here it is really become nuesense and dangerous.Too much is too much.No normal daily living is there due to These animals.

Everything in the world doesn't have to benefit human beings. We are not the only living species in this planet ,there are about 1.2 million known species of living organisms, and they have every right to live as well.
Dont be a frog in the well and have narrow minded thought . Come out of the well and see the big wide world out there, you will feel much better, much calmer and you will start believe in ' Live and let live ' philosophy ! Have a good day

Deforestation has led to all this issue. Poor leopards have no other option. People destroy forest and its natural that Leopards or Elephants or what not will come near city or town for food. Forest department need to take serious measures in conserving forests and maintain wildlife.

Niddodi is just about 4 Km away from Paladka. People in Niddodi are opposing the power plant there and the forest officer, instead of catching the leopard and leaving it inside the jungle somewhere, better take and leave it in Niddodi, so that, the Survey officers will not survey the area again and again for the fear of their life. This is the natural way of protest.
