London, Jan 4 (IANS): An English lower division football league player was brutally attacked on the pitch leaving him unconscious, with a broken jaw that has left him scarred for life, a media report said Sunday.

Karl Fellow, a Stourport Swifts footballer in the Midland League Premier Division was allegedly hit by an opposition player during his team's away game at Walsall Wood FC on New Year's Day, mirror.co.uk reports.

The 29-year-old needed surgery to repair his jaw and teeth damaged by the single blow to his face.

"The punch came from behind me," said the central midfielder, who has played for the Midland Football League Premier Division club for the past two years.

"I didn't even see who did it to me. One minute I was playing football, the next I was waking up in a hospital bed," Fellow said.
