Udupi, Jan 15: Thousands of devotees witnessed ‘Sapthotsava’ that was held with traditional pomp and fervour on Makaraa Sankranti at Sri Krishna Math here on Wednesday Januray 14.

Makara Sankranti is celebrated in different ways in different parts of India. Makara Sankranti is celebrated to mark the transition of the Sun into Makara rashi (Capricorn) on its celestial path. Makara Sankrati is also regarded as the ’holy phase of transition’ and is believed to mark the end of an inauspicious phase which according to the Hindu calendar begins around mid-December.

The festival began on January 9 with the three-chariot festival held on Makara Sankranti. According to history, Dwaita philosopher Acharya Madhwa established an idol of Lord Krishna nearly 800 years ago, to commemorate which the 'Sapthotsava" is held.

The festive idols were brought to the Madhwa Sarovara in a golden palanquin at around 7.30 pm. The idols were placed into a decorated boat and taken thrice around the sacred pond. The idol of Lord Krishna was placed in the "Brahmaratha", the idol of Lord Mukhyaprana in the "Garuduratha" and the "utsava murtis" of Lord Anantheshwara and Lord Chandramouleshwara were placed in the "Mahapuja Ratha" in front of the Sri Krishna Temple.
Thousands of devotees pulled the chariots around the Car Street while chanting mantras. The idols were then carried to Vasanth Mahal for the puja. It is believed that those who get a darshan of the Lords in the rathas get rid of their sins.

The three-chariot festival was conducted under the guidance of Sri Vidyavallabhatheertha Swamiji of Paryaya Kaniyur Math. Paryaya Swamiji offered sandal oil, paste and flowers to the other swamijis.

Vidyavallabhatheertha Swamiji and Swamijis of other Maths took part in the celebrations.

Vibrant fireworks at the end added special flavour to the celebration.

Udupi is the fun place to be in, during paryaya.. I miss it!

One remarkable thing, is look at the those SWAMIJI's bare chested or minimal kaavi cloth!... generally paryaya, or Shasti/kiru Shashti mahotsava that comes in december-jan period- during scorching winter- these people have to take a dip in chilling cold waters of Madhva or other sarovar, be bare chested and with minimum food and do pooja all day- with bare minimum sleep. That is the power of Sadhu and his Sanyasa! they can't even have enough food and water, because, if they have to go out for a deha badhe, again, they will have take bath and start the process all again!... Sanyasa is tough! problem is Nityananda, Asaram and Rampals make it look like they are real Sants! :(

Velleno, also note that these Swamis who follow strict ritual discipline do not proclaim themselves as God men like those you mentioned. They consider themselves as God's servants and live so. They do bless the devotees but by heart not by show off.

exactly.. their life is toughest!... for 4 months of chaturmasya, during peak monsoon time, they can eat only grains and rest of the stuff...! their clock starts pretty early monring generally, during brahmi muhurta, yoga, cold water snana for all season, pooja parayana praarthana japa... rice based staple diet, one lunch most of the time..no warm clothes, early to bed, sleeping on the simple floor, paduka, renunciate worldy matters.. that is the reason, only Sadhus get a burial in padmasana posture after their skull fractured with a conch at the brahma randhra- signifying Mukti! rest of all mortals in Hindus get a funeral on fire!

it was just a gesture which you turned to religious. when have I cursed Hinduism ? I have only spoken against the fanatics but you are so much into defensive part that even a gesture will prove as gaali to you.
