Udupi, Mar 13: Eight children were injured in a collision between an auto rickshaw and a recklessly driven bus here on Friday March 13.

The accident took place in front of Udupi city municipal council (CMC) office.

The accident occured when a speeding Mangaluru-Udupi Durgamba express bus overtook the auto rickshaw without any warning and took a sudden left just before halting at the bus stop near CMC. The auto driver, who was taken aback, lost control and rammed into the bus from the rear end. The impact of the collision was such that the auto rickshaw overturned.

There were eight children in the rickshaw, students of St Mary's School and Christian High School.

Two of the children, Yuvraj studying in 1st standard and Sona, a student of 4th standard, were badly injured and admitted to hospitals. The rest six sustained minor injuries. Auto driver Krishna Nittur was also injured.

Soon after the accident, the driver and the conductor of the bus escaped from the spot.

Udupi traffic police arrived at the spot, seized the bus and registered a case.

Permanently terminate driving licence, then only rest of the drivers will learn lesson. And heavy penalty should imposed to bus owners too, cause they also responsible pressure on drivers and conductors for more collection.

Sadly these preventable Accidents are a regular affair.
It does not affect the authorities at all.
Why cant the Police move around in Unmarked vehicles and slap Huge fines for reckless driving.
The Express Buses should not be allowed to stop at the Busstops once the Passengers have got down and the Boarding is over.
Pls also check their Horns(irritable) and the Brake lights and Number plates....Why not put Speed governors.....

Eight Children in Rickshaw is not even a serious matter nowadays. How about 14 Children along with one sitting on lap of driver. Public shout only when accident happens or they ignore rest of the days. Parents do not care what happens to their Children anymore and Authorities only care about their Hawala, then little Children play the price.

Some time back the same transport company bus was speeding and mowed down three innocent poor people at Kaup and evoked great public Ire. The accident evoked public ire and scores of scores of people gathered at the spot to protest. They pelted stones and damaged two buses...and the news was soon forgotten while the police hushed up the case under influence by the local MLA (who is actually supposed to protect the helpless, innocent citizens)
More recently, the same company bus killed three of a family including a pregnant woman in Udupi.

Sadly, the Durgamba Travels owner Shettipal Chatra, has all the key Cong-I (extraordinary corrupt) and BJP politicians in his monthly payout and continues to laugh his way to the bank!

Why the drivers are reckless I don't know. I feel all the Bus drivers should be made pass through defensive driving.

It pathetic to know that the RTO or the police department can do nothing about this. The bus driver escapes from the scene, comes with a bail and the case runs for some years, during which the driver would have lost all conviction and is again driving like his father owns the road. And dare we raise a voice against them, they resort to goondaism and perhaps file a false case saying we hit them, they call for a strike, and we the common man, face the ire. Sheer nonsense.
Daijiworld, a suggestion to you, you do a lot of good things by bringing us transparent news. Why dont you start a campaign, invite readers to sign a online petition and send the same to the concerned authorities. Atleast this might help

What can we call such reckless driving. One hears about speeding buses all the time. Can one call them KILLER BUSES. It is expedient that The Police take a serious note of the careless driving and perhaps install speed governors on some transport vehicles. What has happened Udupi does happen in Mangalore all the time.

The permit is issued to carry only 3 passengers in Auto rickshaw. I have seen most of the auto rickshaws take some time 10-15 children in one auto rickshaw.... why our RTA is not objecting and how the parents are allowing their children to go in such auto rickshaw. Olden days students used to walk miles to go to school/college. Why can't the modern parents ask the children to walk to school.

Dear Stan, Olden days - modern days ? In olden days children could walk quietly along the road, there were no buses with rash drivers. Modern children are no more so strong as those of the olden times: eating food grown with chemical and artificial manure.

Dear Stan, if children walk, in addition to keeping fit, the sun bathing will generate natural Vit D which is one of the most important hormones connected at almost every process in the human body, and deficiency (majority of children and adults are deficient in this wonderful hormone which we get for free) of which is known to cause a myriad of problems which are treated symptomatically rather than hitting at the root cause!!

If children were to be healthy eating natural food, walking, playing, etc. who would solicit the 'pediatricians' with a string of degrees charging through the roof!!

If the driver meets with an accident or is not in a position to control his vehicle, it is rash driving and deserve punishment.
