Mangaluru, Mar 18: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) continued its drive against illegal petty shops in the city for a second day on a row. On Wednesday March 18, the MCC officials demolished all illegal shops at State Bank and Lady Goschen, Kankanady, Valencia, Marnamikatta and other prime locations of the city.

The operation was conducted under the guidance of the revenue commissioner of MCC.

There was a lot of wastage of goods and other commodities as the shopkeepers did not move.

Sunil Kumar Bajal, representative of road side vendors speaking to Daijiworld said, "From past 4 years the corporation has been wanting to vacate the roadside vendors but they have not made any alternative arrangements for them. One-and-a-half years ago, a town vendors' committee was formed consisting of nine members including the commissioner as chairman and mayor, deputy mayor, MCC opposition leaders and our representatives, and four meetings were held. A survey was conducted. They had promised us to give id cards and called us for the same when Vinay Kumar Sorake, minister for urban development came to Mangaluru for a programme. But they did not give us the id cards.

"In Bantwal and Ullal town muncipalities id cards have already been given. When we met the commissioner and the mayor yesterday it was learnt that this is commissioner's decision. She is of the view that accidents occur due to the roadside vendors. They have told us that we can put up shops at any spot that is 100 meters away from a circle or a junction, which is technically not possible. We have planned a protest in front MCC on Thursday March 19 morning," he said.

All were poor when this world started... those who were lazy turned out to be poor... let the rules be common for everyone... want to own a shop? get a valid license, no one will stop you... we humans have problem with everything... if city is not developed, we know to blame the authority...if any development work has to be done, with that also we've got problem...

No street vendors should be allowed anywhere for the following reasons:
    1. The roads are made for vehicles and footpaths(which hardly there) for pedestrians and for these vendors. These vendors cause traffic blocks, pedestrians are forced to walk on road because vendors occupy footpath.
    2. These vendors do not pay any tax and they earn more than a software engineer monthly salary.
    3. These places are unhygienic. Visit the central market area. All the waste just lay on the roads. Isn't that extra work for the MCC to clean their mess?

New markets should be made across the city and these vendors should be relocated there with proper rights.

I really cannot understand this, all of a sudden the MCC decides to conduct a drive on all illegal vendors. What was the MCC doing all this time you have so many vendors near the Central Market who occupy the footpath and cause problems to the general public. Bigger problem is vehicles been parked on footpaths and no action is taken like towing or locking these vehicles. We do not have proper zebra crossing on roads specially K.S. Rao road. Something should be done so that pedestrians do not have any problems on the roads of M'lore.

I find MCC has absolutely no plan no structure, and doesnt haveinterest to develope it.Otherwise a City like Mangalore developing fast day by day should be having a good infra structure, well planned roads etc.but sad,no good roads,no foot path ,buses and lorrys and even rickcshaws all using same road.It is high time atleast new Mayor should see that a footpath is must.school children are going and getting injured,or even die due to negligence ofbus, rikshaw Drivers. How many accidents are Happening? no Speed Limit.noone controls.why cant make one way to buses and heavy vehicles different roads than normal rickshas?super markets should be out of town so that parking is easier and less vehicles in town.Even garages are not a must in living area. All These things should be thought to increase the better health of People living in City. For petty Shops MCC must allot a place but not on road side. Not just demolish. They too must live ,have invested a lot for.Their licence should be cancelled if they dont Keep their place clean.Vendoors also should take some initiative if they want to sell further, not only blame MCC.

Most of Street Vendors are from one particular minority community. Local elected MLA's & many high post profiles are from Minority in DK. So here it would be rather Minority against Minority.

Anyway, instead of destroying things, they could have relocated them after charging some penalty. Government should encourage working class & relocated them to a legalised area, & not destroying their earning sources.

Give ID cards to these vendors & give them specific place to sell.
Its not wise decision to ban them to ply their trade. Supreme Court too has given them permission with certain regulations.
People throng their stalls as they get some products at cheaper price than shops.

We like to see our Mangalore city like Singapore in terms of cleanliness, interlock sidewalks, wider pavements either sides of the road and above all educate public on the a good civic sense.

    MCC's move is laudable.

I feel pity for these small vendors. Cleaning city to avoid accidents good moove by MCC. Traffic in our city increased last three decades. All roads are concreeted without footpath by MCC. It took almost 3 years to build foot path near Mallikatta area after the death of couple of bike riders. MCC road development planning is so poor which is the main cause for accidents. If you are in Mangalore please check road side finish at Kadri area coming down from circuit house leading to temple road just before the diversion road edges are not finished big dicth along drive way no foot path for the past 4 years. It speaks about our MCC Engineers planning and concerns to pedestrains and their life. Street vendors lived in Mangalore for long with their trade giving daily hafta to MCC officials and the police. Now may be strict officers are in place have to face the pinch of it. Our elected leaders are busy in getting their share just before election they remember general public and their problems. In our state we can not say people are poor have problem for food to survive them self, government provided anna bhagya so they can have ganjee and sleep praising siddaramayya. We wont get any labor to work in our farm agriculture is destroyed in our district due to poor policy of all our governments (Cong, BJP, JDS) Middle class citizens, farmers are suffering. Our district advanced in education and construction industry grown so all farmers are on road. If MCC issues license to these petty traders they can earn their bread and little revenue to MCC. None of them are interested to resolve actual problems of public, interested in vote bank politics and looting the public.
