Church in Mumbai attacked, incident captured on CCTV

Mumbai, Mar 22 (TNN): Three unidentified men attacked the St George Catholic Church in New Panvel, Navi Mumbai in the wee hours of Saturday by hurling stones inside the church compound and damaging the glass enclosure of the statue of Saint George.

The surprise attack which lasted for just over a minute has shocked the Christian community, while their leaders have strongly condemned it by calling the incident a political mischief.

An FIR has been lodged by the parishioners at Khandeshwar police station.

The former vice chairperson of Maharashtra minorities commission and currently the president of Indian Christian Voice, Abraham Mathai, told TOI: ''As soon as I got to know about the church attack, I called up the top officials of Navi Mumbai police department. They have promised to catch the culprits at the earliest. I am shocked and saddened by today's incident as it reflects the inability of the government to protect the minorities.''

Mathai added: ''These communal goons are emboldened by the indifference of the government at the Centre and the state, and therefore continue perpetrating such heinous crimes with impunity.''

One of the church parishioners told TOI: ''The attack took place at 1.30am when three men with faces covered with handkerchiefs came outside the church on a motorcycle and hurled stones at the statue of Saint George. We have shown the CCTV footage to the cops.''

The Church belongs to the Syro Malabar denomination, and its head is Bishop Thomas Elavanal. The building was consecrated at the spot in 2007.

The assistant commissioner of police (Panvel division) SB Suryavanshi told TOI: ''The miscreants had thrown stones at the church entrance from the roadside and later fled from there. A case has been registered at the Khandeshwar police station for further investigation.''

The attck is really shamefull. wheather christian, hindu or muslim whoever is involved funish them. Our problem is whenver these type of incident happens we blame those whom political party wants. for eg. these type of attacks our communal political party congress tries to point out BJP and RSS. firstly we should clear who attacked. In delhi during election time church attcked. During that time attack was going to affect the number of votes of BJP. So wise should think its the work of same community or any other opponent party. Same as in karnataka. I request people please think on positive side and dont encourage the culprits to do more and more in future. Hopefully our christian brother will think positively on this and try to keep peace.

Dear Vinayak Pprabhu, Mangalore- I fully agree that inquisition was very wrong, bad and many people suffered under the same. At the same time please note the following:

    1. Nobody can change history.
    2. I live today and cannot be held responsible for what happened 200 years ago.
    3. I am a Christian and you are a hindu because were born to parents of that religion. Its not our fault.

In view of the above let us stop fighting over religion in the best interest of the society and try to live in religious harmony.

    Flavian,
Problem is not just about the BJP but about who is leading and in control of the BJP. The PM and the BJP President are well known hardliners although now in their present roles they present a different 'outward' appearance as demanded by the positions they hold.
I have known this all along even during the run up to the elections but unfortunately many fell for the 'Development' trap and voted Modi not BJP. Add to that the main opposition Congress party dug their own grave and hardly put up a fight. People will eventually get wise but I hope it is not too late.
World powers will not intervene politically or otherwise until and unless there is some 'genocide' on a massive scale. However, there will be a general reluctance from 'investors' from Western nations to do long term investment in India if these kind of incidences carry on unabated and more importantly if the Central government continues to show indifference.

By looking at the recent religious unrest across Hindustan, may be sooner than later Hindustan seems to be marching towards embracing Taliban culture (needless to say that historically it was part of akhand bharat).
    Sorry to see that -
Those who engage in these kind of acts, really don't understand the real strength & beauty of Hinduism. Historically hinduism withstood all kind of attacks millions of years & still standing tall and with all its might (no other country across the world can uphold the diverse cultures like Hindustan. which has more than few hundred languages/ living styles/ worship styles/food/sports & games and what not)
This is nothing but the acts of Aryan remote controlled mindset to kill the sanathan dharma.

I Don't understand why people need to debate such incidents and make unwanted disharmony among communities.who ever doing it is not the issue here.rather all of us need to ask ourselves as to why is it happening now at this point of time.as a christian i want to question myself why God allows this things to happen.and in the silence of my heart i understand that its because of the big gap between the Church and the people.very unfortunately our churches are become more of Financial institutes rather than prayer houses.there is no compassion shown to the poor any more.clergy wants to lead lives of luxuries rather than simplicities.many priest today wouldn't want to visit poor, sick and abandoned, rather they want to spend time with the rich and the elite.if all the parish Priest unite and have a close bond with thier flocks,i am sure the unity is enough for people to think twice before attacking our churches.and more over God will ensure our safety more than any Government.People Please wake up from your slumber and face the Truth.Jai Hind

Why three youngsters need to come in two wheeler and throw stones at church? They are not from nearby place and they do not have faith in the religion and also they want to defame the community. That is their motive. Such incidents are increasing around us day by day to an alarming extent. Appears like they do not have fear of the law of the land or of their future. They appear to be born without any faith because if ever they thought before doing it they would have feared at least the God they believed because God is one and method of worship is different. Government should start compensating for the loss then these kind of wicked practices will stop.

    Vinayak,
The goan inquisition happened centuries ago, if it did happen at all. But today it is not relevant as it is the 21st century and not 16th century. Also don't forget the friendly relations that the great Vijayanagra Emperor Krishnadevara had with the Portuguese from whom he imported thousands of horses every year and cannon for his army. Full protection was accorded to Jesuit priests during the reign of the great Emperor. If Christian's are so bad why are lakhs of highly educated Hindus emigrating to western countries and taking their citizenship? This isn't the 16th century and no point in talking of an event that has no meaning in today's world.

If anyone thinks logically, its very clear that this act has nothing to do with BJP, RSS or any other right wing Hindu groups. How come all these incidences increase suddenly now? Even a robbery attempt on a christian school is linked to BJP and RSS nowadays.
One thing is clear, there is a well orchestrated conspiracy going on against Modi.
Yesterday there was a candle light march against a crime where the culprit is arrested, an inspector transferred and the enquiry is going on. Just to show Mangalore in a bad light across the world.

This stone pelting incidence in Mumbai seems to be the handiwork of either Christian fringe groups to gather hatred towards Modi or it might be the work of hardcore muslim fringe elements who are trying to bring in a rift between Hindus and Christians.

I m really confused as to who is the real God,unless there is a concrete proof of his existence, but I also feel that since India is a land of all the three most powerful religions of the world,it gives me a secured feeling that we are able to avert any possible danger coming to our country if at all the prayers of a particular sect is fulfilled, so you know what I mean.

"leave the country and find a grave for yourself. that's the place for souls."
    - Do you have a grave business? Are you suggesting this because we will have a grave ban like beef ban coming from the Hindutva party? Is there a grave danger ?
    - The place where we should wish our souls go to is with God in Heaven not in a grave which is what you believe in.

Yes there are many so called Indians by birth sold themselves in the hands of dirty political misuse.
India's politics reached to the worst level as people are still under slavery of these rogues.

I was questioning siculars double standards. Just few days back two Hindus were murdered in Shimoga by PFI goondas and these KSV, PFI, KFD etc were sleeping and didnt say a single word against those criminals. If it was the other way round these useless groups would hav ejumped on Hindus.

Whether its mandir or church no one has the right to attack it. Its not at all acceptable whatever reason you give.

"Close all the christian schools and colleges until they stop attacking on us"
    - Jesus cares about the salvation of both Christians and non-Christians
    - By closing Christian schools we are saying that Satan has won
    - Jesus Christ has promised that he will be with us all days, even to the consummation of the world (Matthew 28:20). Christ never fails on his promises.
    - Jesus Christ also says "And fear ye not them that kill the body, and are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matthew 10:28)
    - We Christians must pray to Jesus Christ to open the hearts of our sanghi brothers and sisters

avinash, ksd, bluru, agree with you on the issue of Kashmiri Pandits. It is a pity that we feel hurt only when one's own community is offended. If we were to be together in condemning the wrong, no matter which religion, the culprits would not have been bold to do what they are doing today. All Indians, irrespective of their religion should isolate the people who violate the law. We should suffocate them. During the bomb blasts and riots when we had donated blood, we did not know to whom it went, the Hindus, Muslim or others because the blood did not recognise any religion. It recognised its own group. Only time, we were all together was in the case of Nirbaya rape issue. I wish we are together at all times to condemn the wrong and stand together to fight for justice.

In one year of BJP rule at the centre, so far India achieved only Church attacks mostly in BJP ruled state, thank God Delhi saved after AAP win. Beef ban in BJP ruled states, more beef export from Gujarat, more black money deposited in Swiss banks that is why PM can not talk more on this now. During Modi’s election campaign this was not in his agenda. If it was there he would have taken a U turn. Now just to keep BJP in news about India in the world they are achieving only this goal.

If the church attacks happens in West Bengal, Karnataka etc, Central govt says law & order is state subject. But when it happens in Delhi, Hariyana, Maharashtra BJP have no answer. After this Chaddi Maama came to the power at the central, attacks on the churches and mosques are increasing. The President of India & honorable Supreme court of India should intervene and dismiss Modi govt and impose president rule in the Central.

The Mumbai attacks on the Churches is a prelude showing clear cut signals that the Siva Sena will be wiped off by the same Delhi broom.

Already the 5 year prison sentence for the beef eating or carrying has put millions of people into serious economic crisis and to hunger through taking away Rs. 120/kg beef from the eating plate now the Church attacks are going to accelerate the day of political judgment.
