Mangaluru, Mar 25: The relatives of the elderly woman who died a few days after attending a health check-up camp at Puttur gathered at Wenlock hospital, where post-mortem was conducted on Wednesday March 25, and alleged that she and a young girl who died were 'forced' into attending the camp and undergoing surgeries.

Poovakka (69) and Ayishath Haseena (9) died a few days after they attended a health check-up camp organized at Panaje on March 10. Following their deaths, the locals had on Tuesday March 24 protested in front of Panaje primary health centre, blaming the doctors of Omega hospital, which had organized the camp, for their deaths. Four others who attended the camp - Sundari, Hussainar, Kalyani and Kittanna Rai - have also been affected.

Speaking to daijiworld, Poovakka's son Kusha Rai said that his mother did not have any ailment other than diabetes. "Omega Hospital had organized a free health check-up camp at Panaje primary health centre. An agent name Harish forced us to attend the camp which was held under Vajpayee Arogyashree health scheme," he said.

"They (staff at the camp) took our BPL cards and called us to Mangaluru for advanced treatment. Just to make sure that we do as they say, they took our BPL cards," he alleged. He also added that 13 of the 24 people who attended the camp were asked to come to Mangaluru for treatment.

When asked what reason was given by doctors for Poovakka's surgery, Kusha said, "They did not give us any reason. They inserted some kind of pipe into my mother's mouth and then I do not know what happened. She was shifted to ICU. They did the operation without informing us and without taking our signatures for consent. They charged us Rs 15,000 for the surgery."

Poovakka's relative Babu Rai alleged, "The agent, Harish, gets money out of Vajpayee Arogya scheme and that is why he forced BPL card holders to attend the camp. He and other health officers who conducted the camp get Rs 1.5 lac for each surgery. To earn some money they called 13 people for surgery."

Speaking about the young girl who died, he said, "Ayishath Haseena was a fourth standard student. Her teachers were saying that she was wonderful child and had no health problems. She was forcibly taken to the camp as she was weak."

Babu Rai also said that Omega hospital should give compensation to the families of the deceased and stop conducting health check-up camps. He also demanded the termination of the hospital's licence.

Omega Hospital clarifies

Responding to the allegations, administrator of Omega hospital Dr Bhardwaj said, "The camp was organized by the government, where doctors at Panaje referred patients to Omega and a few other hospitals.

"The patients (who came to Omega) were treated carefully and examined with ECG, Echo scanning etc, and when they left the hospital they were fully fit. The deaths occured a week later in their houses," he said.

"The poor people do not have knowledge about medicines. They did not take proper medication and did not take enough rest. A doctor who examined them said that the deaths may have occured due to blood clots later and the DHO also filed the report. It was not the hospital's mistake," he opined.

Asked about allegations against Harish, he said, "Harish is not an agent. He is a camp coordinator and his job is to refer patients to hospitals. He sent patients to other hospitals too. The allegations are false. Omega hospital has never before conducted a camp like this, and for the first time it was held under the aegis of the government."

As the state assembly is in session, health minister U T Khadar was not available for comment.

Puttur: Death of poor rural patients- protest against hospital

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Angered by these adverse developments, people protested by placing the body of Poovakka in front of the primary health centre at Panaje on Tuesday.

In all Health Check-Up camps they put fear in the minds of some ed people that they are having some serious hidden illness and this way psychologically pressurize them to come for major treatment to the Hospital in Mangalore. But if you independently go to some other good doctor and again have check up you will find that the Doctors of Health Check up camps have told utter lie with ulterior motive even though you have no illness.

It is alleged that per patient the PHC gets Rs.1.50 lakh from Govt.
Probably it is shared by the Agent-coordinator, PHC officials and the Private Hospital. What a loot in the name of Arogya Bhagya or Bajpeyi Arogyashri Arogya Suraksha !!
The rot is too deep. So all earlier cases where village patients are referred to Private Hospital in Mangalore should be thoroughly investigated by Lokayukta. This seems to be like multi-crore fraud.

Where ever medical colleges are there, those hospital issue a Health card, if the person falls sick, then he/she will be admitted to Gen.ward and they are treated by MBBS students or PG students. these patients are become live object for their study perpuse. people never take serious about these medical college or these hospital based medical Health cards. these students pays donations and fees in lakhs and lakhs. so some of hospital bother only about their MBBS student and their hospital name but least bother about poor patients.so treatment is free and death also FREE

Why is our system such that the Panaje PHC has to refer to a private hospital whose costs will be reimbursed by government?
Why shouldn't Panaje PHC refer Wenlock hospital which is the nearest government higher centre?
Why is it that even after a century of existence, Wenlock hospital does not have facilities to provide tertiary level care to the people of the district?
Why does the government pay the private hospitals through various Bhagya schemes instead of using the same money to develop its own hospitals to excellent standards?68 yrs after independence if the government had developed a good healthcare infrastructure,Poovakka and Ayishath Haseena wouldn't need to go to Omega Hospital for specialty treatment, They just would have go to Wenlock.

I am a member of Lions Club, and our Clubs conduct Health Check up camps for Rural people or Students of Government/Zilla Panchayat schools, in collaboration with Hospitals of Mangalore, But and such Hospitals who are also having Medical college always send only the Medical Students for such health Check-Up camps and most of the students dont even know the local languages. Only the Hospital PRO accompanies those students and no Senior Doctors accompany them. These students are seen to be quite amateur and cant even conduct check-up of Eyes Teeth or Heart but still they call it as Total Health Check-up. I think similar careless health Check up camp was conducted at Panaje.
The Hospital of Mangalore who conducted that Medical Camp at Panaje should be made fully accountable for the deaths of two villagers and they should be made to pay proper compensation to the family of deceased.

Only if you pay money you are treated like king from these hospitals so that they can loot the patients...What can they do with poor patients they cant loot them coz it is govt which is paying money for the hospital....Hospitals and schools now have become money making machine and have lost its human touch...In school those kids who are admitted under RTE are seldom looked down and discriminated just because they are poor and not paying feez...It is govt which reimburse money for these hospital for their service how come they neglect poor patients and treat them as they wish...It seems like these poor patients were not operated by experts ......strict action need to be taken against hospital who discriminate poor people...Hope there is nothing like kidney racket...

Why the name of that so called 'famous Hospital from Mangalore ' is not disclosed by Police and the MLA?
Whether the students of Medical college attached to that famous college were involved in those operations on rural patients?
Whether the senior doctors of that hospital allowed the students to perform operation as a part of their practical lessons ?

Those are very good points raised by you, Mr Shenava.
People need to know the name of the hospital.
But more importantly people would like to know if students or junior doctors just performed surgery without understanding the consequence of their work.
It is extremely sad that some teaching hospitals use poor living people as guinea pigs to the trainees.

I firmly believe that the hospital concerned has a duty to disclose all the facts. People must not let this pass by as just another case of simple negligence.
