12-year-old Muslim girl wins Bhagwad Gita contest

Mumbai, Apr 3 (PTI): A 12-year-old Muslim girl has emerged topper at a contest on Bhagwad Gita.

Mariyam Asif Siddiqui who studies in Class 6 in a school at Mira Road near Mumbai won the contest from among 4,500 students who appeared for the competition.

She received the first prize in an inter-school competition for explaining the teachings of the holy book.

"We are delighted. She prepared a whole month for the contest," her father Asif told PTI.

The development comes as a whiff of fresh air at a time when politicians' comments about Gita created controversy.

Mariyam studies in Cosmopolitan High School at Mira Road and participated in "Shrimad Bhagwad Gita Champions League" organised by ISKCON International Society last month with an objective to spread teachings of the holy book.

Around 195 schools had participated in this competition. Of them 105 were private and 90 were municipal schools.

Mariyam said she learned from Bhagwad Gita that humanity is the biggest religion in this world.

"It was very interesting to read Bhagwad Gita as I have got a lot of information about life from it. The holy book has taught me the golden rules of life. It says that though there are many religions but humanity is the biggest religion among all," Mariyam said.

The English version of the holy book was given to students for a month for preparation purpose. A teacher was also appointed to help students understand the book in detail.

After a month, a written examination was held with 100 questions.

Asif said he is happy and a proud father as his daughter has shown a keen interest in reading a holy book of other religion.

"I have told children to respect every religion as they show us the right path," he said.

If my child was given a holy book and asked to study it for a competition, I would protest. This book should be kept holy and outside debate. Soon we'll start having clashes as to why one is better than the other. This should be removed from schools at once. We have enough headaches already and now we don't need this new one.

Dear Ashok, competition is not forced on any one. You do not have to protest, just tell your daughter not to participate. That is it. Relax!

Avani, the altruist this is the same that is said about conversion , about ghar wapasi. My point is why set the stage in the first place. I will protest but there will be a lot of people who are not aware of what this is to even protest. If you see the stats out there it is just a small percentage of people who cause the problem. I think this should be nipped in the bud. There should be no religion studies , competition or religious ideologies taught in schools. It has to be a total educational experience on how to live and work in society. Religion should be a familial responsibility. I will take a chill pill, but you get an education.

Mr. Avani sound familiar " it is not forced upon you ". This is a school, so is 'education not forced upon you '?. Your logic is not sound, a school should have a syllabus that is common to all and for all to participate. I want to ask you are you saying that the Gita be a mandatory subject in all schools ?.. if this is the case then I agree that you can have these competition. Will this go well with the Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Parsee's and many others ?.

First of all one should congratulate the parents for allowing the little angel to study other religion. See the positive comments of people from all communities in DW. I am fed up reading negative comments accusing each other. One good deed by this young girl can create positive revolution. I request readers and writers to focus on positive angle and bring out positive messages from all religions. Rigidity is the reason for all misunderstanding. Be pragmatic. The girl can remain practicing muslim but can always appreciate other views. The world will be a different place. Nothing like what happened in Kenya will happen again. No one will butcher young students after asking his religion.

No harm in learning and understand0ing any religious book. Dr. Zakir Naik memories each and every verses of Bhagvat Geeta and Bible and so was the late Ahmed Deedat, the renowned religious preacher.

In my view all these scared and inspirational books need to kept personal. I don't think we need to create a competition using this material and compete with one another. It is not a scientific or mathematical deduction to be treated in an absolute manner. This will end up becoming a fundamentalists took and soon it will become similar to religious studies. The Gita is there for people who seek it and it should not be entrusted upon anyone.

This little girl has done a great job in winning this competition and she would do well in any topic. I applaud her and her family for allowing her to take part in such an event. I have no issues with learning different religious text as if there is one God as everyone says then why should any religion consider ownership of that almighty?.
