Karwar: Fish prices soar - People turn sour, miss normal meal

Karwar, Apr 16: It is a popularly known fact that people of Uttara Kannada district relish boiled rice only with mackerel curry. The district boasts of a overwhelmingly large populace which feels that meal not accompanied by fish can never satiate the appetite. Fish, they deem, is as important as the staple food itself. However, the present drought  in fish catches has snatched fish away from their menu.

The fishing boats which did brisk business in August, September and October last year, have rarely left the shores of late, as they have not been able to get good fish catches. Since the last three months, the situation has gone from bad to worse, with most of the purse siene boats having been moored, while trawler boats continued to function, as the owners are trying to tackle the situation. These boats even find that the catches are not even enough to meet fuel cost. Even the country boats conducting fishing activity are deprived of  goodluck.

As usual, many fishermen have taken bus to Malpe and Mangaluru in search of greener pastures. The fishermen are so distraught that they are loosing interest in their traditional way of living. As such, the owners of boats many a time depend on immigrant labour from Odisha. The burden of loan is staring owners of boats directly in the eye. The risk of social inequality looms large if the situation does not improve in the coming days.

Costly fishes like pomphret, king fish etc which used to ring cash boxes of boat owners have completely vanished. Even mackerel and sardines are scarce. Mackerel has become five to six times costly. Common varieties of fish and crabs have also been commanding high prices now. Fish merchants from Goa, Ratnagiri etc have also been visiting  the district to make use of the situation, and are competing with local fisherwomen to sell the fish caught by them at their places, but this too has not resulted in slump in prices.

Assistant director in the department of fisheries, Chandrashekhar, admits that there has been a steep decline in fish catches since the last three months. However, he observes that trawlers and boats have been able to earn their maintenance. 'Fishes many a time migrate from one place to the other. This might be the reason for this situation. We hope that the situation will change for the better in the coming days, and bring smiles back on the faces of fishermen,' he hopes.

Earlier the fishing was done with traditional country boats and the fishing nets prepared differently for different fishes.Designed in such a way the small fishes can escape the catch and will grow. Now the holes of the nets of the mechanised boats are so small even the small fishes can't escape. Then how the fishes can grow and breed.Somebody mentioned fish can migrate. It can migrate from one village to another not from all coastal area of D.K.Earlier all fishermen with less capital expenditure on country boats and nets with systematic fishing practices without curbing the growth of the fishes used to procure plenty of fishes. Now lesser people with heavy capital expenditure for mass catches with curbing the growth of the fishes disturbed the demand and supply of the fishes.Athi ase gathi kedu.

Lokesh, I think pork prices are also gone up but not in the same rate. You have to analyse the situation little bit more to get the answer for that. Pork is mainly consumed by Christians (provided we are talking about our district) and beef is consumed mainly by Muslims closely followed by Christians. Mutton and Chicken is consumed by all. When the availability of beef got lesser and lesser, Christians just switched to pork where there is no competition where as Muslims have to jump to the other side which is common to everyone. Now a big number joins that already big group but supply remained same if not reduced. What you expect the prices to do? they have to go up steeply. The demand for pork is not alarmingly increased unlike Mutton and Chicken.

Good analysis and economics. It is true and soon pork will also go up when beef is not available many will start consuming pork openly or hiding

Vishal, you have to compare theprices of everything for the last 20 years and I am sure everything's gone up but what is alarming is the way they have gone up. Nothing is gone that high but meat. Mutton was relatively cheap in 1980s and beef was freely available which helped to check the rice of mutton and other meat. The prices are rocketed only when the number of hotels/shops that serves beef gone down. You're right , when you think logically when supply of one thing stops the demand for alternative will rise so as the prices. It is simple to understand even for common man. Getting the cheap meat (in this case beef) will help to check the price rise of other meat and now it is transferring to fish. Soon the eggs will feel the heat too and watch out for it. As you said it is the business law. Man will sacrifice something but food because all the harwork is done to obtain that food. The people who are rich or even middle class can manage with the price rise for some time but it is the poor who will be hit hard. Just imagine, in a village a farmer will have his morning tea and then have ganji(kaje ari) with nungelda chatney and work hard in the farm. Evening meal generally will be with a fish curry, bootai or bangude but if they can't afford for that, where they can get strength from?? Nungelda chatney is basic for them.

I don't want to be sarcastic but this is only the beginning and the worst yet to come. The amount of fish we are catching from sea is going to deplete their numbers today or tomorrow. In western countries there is lot of restrictions on fishing (having a license, banned fishing area and months..etc..) but in Indian we do not have anything like that. Government do not invest anything on sea wealth. We can grow the cattle (lamb, goat, cow, bull, buffalo and pig)as alternative food which will diverse the consumable food. With the beef ban, government is pushing the citizens into hell. The cheap meat beef getting expensive. It has effected the price of other meat over the years like mutton, lamb, chicken and pork. Agree or not, that is also going to effect the price of fish and for a change if we all become vegetarians, then we are all competing along with those animals for whatever the vegetation left in India where agricultural land is getting smaller and smaller and urban area spreading in radius. man by nature is non vegetarian and maintain that natural equilibrium, the eating habit should be left for the individuals to decide not for the governments. Ultimately every Indians are going to pay the price for banning certain meat and it the sooner we realise that the better.

The biggest issue is over fishing and lack of regulations on fishing like size of the fish and season. Until recently one could get fully grown big Kane in Europe. Now they are exporting little babies which no one buys.In Europe they had a similar situation where the stocks of Cod and other fish dwindled and since then they are very strict in controlling the catches.

Scarcity of fish is direct result of rampant fishing even during spawning time, pollution, etc. This situation is only going to worsen in the future!!

Is it not funny that somebody is giving a reason that "Fishes have migrated"!!LOL!! Hope they have not migrated to Gulf countries in search of greener pastures!!!LOL!!

The only one thing remaining for the common man available free, now, is 'air'!! There too, in some metro cities, some people are cashing in by opening oxygen parlours and doing good business!!

Would anybody have imagined even in his dream that he would have to shell out Rs 20 at the least for one bottle of drinking water?? Jai Jawan Jai Kissan!!

    *1982: beef Rs.11/ Pork 18/- Mutton 24/-
*Today For  Pork is 125/- Beef is 250/-
*Why Beef overtaken Pork because less people like you eat only Beef?
*Mutton is gone almost 400 Plus.
See the difference from 1985 and today then imagine yourself.
