Mangaluru, May 2: The second day of the 19th Federation Cup saw Karnataka athletes clinching quite a few medals in various events.
Karnataka stands at the top place in team standings, with a score of 63. Army is placed second with a score of 46 while Kerala third with a score of 40.
In women's shotput, Karnataka's Uma P S won the gold (13.04 m), with Kironjot of Punjab winning the silver (12.60 m). However, Uma did not qualify for the Asian Athletics Championship to be held in China.
In men's decathlon, local boy Abhishek Shetty triumphed, notching up a total of 6630 points in the 10 events. Raneesh of Gujarat came second with 6391 points and Suren R of Indian Bank third with 6264 points.
In men's 400 m hurdles, Durgesh Kumar of Army won the gold (50.29) and Rama Chandran, also of Army bagged the silver (50.35) while A Dharun of Tamil Nadu won the bronze (51.14). Durgesh qualified for the Asian Athletics.
Anu R of Kerala won the gold in women's 400 m hurdles (59.13) and found a place in the Asian Athletics. Arpitha M of Karnataka came second (1.00.79) and M Loganayaki came third (1.02.99).

Former star athlete P T Usha presented the medals to winners of women's 800 m race. Commenting on the winner of the race Tintu Luka, P T Usha said, "She is in good form but I am not happy with the fact that there was no one to push her to do better. She is capable of clearing 400 m hurdles in under two minutes, and has performed better before. I am sure she will do better in future."
Anju Bobby George, who is regarded as one of the best athletes in India, presented the medals to winners of women's 20-km walk. Speaking to daijiworld, she said, "This is my first visit to Mangaluru. It is a very good event and I am happy to see Karnataka winning medals. I am looking forward to some good performances in the next two days."
Speaking to daijiworld, winner of men's 400 m hurdles Durgesh Kumar said that he was happy with his performance. "It is for the first time that I have am getting selected to represent the nation and I am very happy about it. I am also happy with the crowd support."
Men's decathlon winner Abhishek Shetty speaking to daijiworld said, "I am not happy with just winning the gold medal. I expected to score more than 7,000 points. I got more points in hurdles and javelin throw. But I am happy that I won in Mangaluru."
Winner of women's 100 m dash Srabani Nanda thanked her family and coach for supporting her. "I did not get a good start but what matters is I got a good finish. I am not so happy with the results. I am satisfied with the arrangements, the food and cultural programmes. I did not expect this event to be of this high quality."
Nanda who qualified for the Asian Athletics to be held in China further said, "In 2011 I had sustained injury. I have to do better in China and concentrate on not getting injured. I am happy that I was the fastest woman today."
Health minister U T Khadar, MLC Ivan D'Souza mayor Jacintha Alfred, SP Dr Sharanappa and other dignitaries presented medals to winners of various events.
The day ended with cultural programmes by Bhargavi dance group, Udupi, Lokamanya Tilak Sanskrithik Nyas, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh and others.

Mangaluru, May 2: The day 2 of the 19th Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championship on Saturday May 2 began on a high note for Karnataka as Deepamale Devi won the gold in the women's 20-km walk.
Unlike most of the events, the 20-km walk was held at Tannir Bavi and not at Mangala Stadium.
Karnataka's Deepamale Devi clinched the gold clocking 1:44:29, followed by Punjab's Sandeep Kaur who won the silver with a timing of 1:48:03, and Priyanka of Uttar Pradesh bagged the bronze with a timing of 1:52:27.
Apart from the 20-km walk, other events held during the morning session included 110 m decathlon hurdles for men, decathlon discus throw for men, and decathlon pole vault for men.
