Mangaluru: Contradictory predictions: Will monsoon arrive in time ?

Daijiworld Media Network-Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, May 16: Different weather organisations have presented contradictory seasonal outlook for the monsoon this year.

Monsoon will not be delayed this year, but will grace the coastal region in time, say officials from Indian Meteorological Department in Bengaluru.

Only fear is the region may witness a shortfall of 7 % out of the 832 millimetre normal rain it receives every year between June and September, say the same officials.

As per the prediction of Meteorological department, the monsoon which will reach the Kerala state on May 30 will bring relief in the coastal belt on June 4. Farmers can indulge in their agricultural activities as usual, they anticipate.

Some other predictions

A statement from Srinivas Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), says that the onset of monsoon in the state will be only after June 10. Also, it will be a weak monsoon period and might affect early sowing activities. He said it would be better to wait for the final outlook till May end or first week of June.

He also said that as per the outlook presented by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there was 68 per cent probability of the country as a whole receiving below normal rainfall.

Bengaluru-based Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation (C-MMACs) too has predicted that about 70 pc of Karnataka will receive deficient rainfall in June.

The seasonal outlook presented by Noida-based Skymet Weather Services Private Limited, and South Asian Climate Outlook Forum (SASCOF), Pune, contradicted the IMD and C-MMACs predictions.

Skymet has predicted that there was 60 percent chance of normal rainfall during the entire monsoon period. It has predicted that the onset of monsoon in Karnataka would be much earlier, as early as end of May.

One can only wait and see for the arrival of real monsoon. Meanwhile pre-monsoon showers have been witnessed throughout the state.

We are not cutting down the trees. Rather, we are hacking our legs with our hands. I remember, during my school days, it used to rain cats and dogs for days and nights together without a break and what do we have today? Rains make a guest appearance and dissipate within an hour. The rate at which we are cutting down the trees, my apprehension is that after a few years this beautiful place of ours will resemble a concrete jungle. No greenery will be left and all that we come across will be buildings. Just take a look at our highways. It is painful to see barren land where once an ocean of greenery could be seen. Where are the majestic banyan trees and the other towering trees gone? Our greed has eaten them. They are gone forever. At least now, for the sake of the future generation, let us resolve to plant saplings and nurture them so that our grand children will understand what greenery is.

In India the Metoc Department can only predict things after they have happened. They will say Cold rains came, driven sideways through the trees by north winds, and snows followed, this is the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate what will be the effect in the long run...

Believe in the predictions of a local astrologer(who does not take money) at least but not of our MET department. They get wrong always.
    take this one for example...
They say Monsoon will arrive one week late this time...when in fact it has already arrived a week back!
    All Nonsense fellows.
Should learn from the UK and US Met departments...they hardly go wrong!
