Mangaluru, May 22: Commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Air India Express crash near Bajpe airport in 2010, the district administration on Friday May 22 paid a solemn homage to the victims of the crash at Kenjar.

District incharge minister Ramanath Rai, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim, zilla panchayat CEO Srividya, airport director J T Radhakrishnan, and other officials placed wreaths to pay their respects to the departed souls.

Expressing his condolence, Ramanath Rai said, "Five years ago Mangaluru witnessed a massive catastrophe in the form of the plane crash. It was a very tragic incident which we cannot forget. I can still remember those days when I visited the hospital and it was not possible for any of us to recognise the deceased. I extend my deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy."

Speaking to the media, DC A B Ibrahim said the work on the construction of a memorial park for the victims of the crash will start in a week's time. "The blueprints and other things are ready and New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) and Mangalore International Airport (MIA) have also joined hands in this work. The park will come up near the Kulur bridge leading to Tannirbavi."

Regarding pending compensation to the plane crash victims, DC Ibrahim said, "Only the disputed cases which are in the court are pending. Families of all other victims have received compensation."

The air crash, one of India's worst aviation disasters, had claimed 158 lives and spared eight passengers.

May the SOULS of dear departed, Rest in Peace we pray. Pain of Loss of a family member can never be measured by others. It is easily said as " Time is the best healer " !! Every year on this day we hear authorities giving false promises. What help is a park going to be for the families, instead this same amount - extend the runway at airport & name that runway as
22/05..!! This will at least help other passengers & airlines in future.
I am certain if a park is done, maintenance will be of poor quality & in a couple of years that park will be of no use & no value too. So whose tax money is being spent & for what purpose.
Come on authorities, think out of the box and do some thing useful to society and people at large rather than some thing useful to Politicians & other authorities at large..!!

EVERY TRAGEDY WHETHER ROAD,WATER OR AIR CRASH WHERE VALUABLE HUMAN LIVES ARE LOST IS A REMINDER TO ALL CONCERNED TO TAKE PRECAUTIONARY STEPS TO AVOID THE SAME IN FUTURE BUT AFTER SOME TIME EVERYBODY FORGETS THE SAME.

Every year our adminstration wakes up and talks about the memorial. Guys wake up extend the runway, bring in morden aircraft landing fecilites to Mangalore airport. Stop shedding crocodile tears. Our country has enough funds for PM to travel 19 times abroad in a year, but dont have funds for such essential works. Height of Hipocresy. Farmers who are back bone of the nation are completely neglected . Essential requirements like this are shelved and we are busy image building. Ernaa ammerna gunt popundu is the attitude

It was a real massive catastrophe in the form of the plane crash.
May departed souls rest in peace.
Memorials be there, but more than that, genuine steps to avert such accidents in future are real major tributes to departed souls.
Otherwise we may have to make many such memorials for the loosing lives and insurance settlements.
