Mangalore, Apr 17: Low water level in the Thumbe vented dam has been a cause of worry to the district administration these days.  Owing to lack of rain water level is continuously decreasing in the dam for the last few days. If this situation continues in the same way, city may soon face major water problem, said sources.

Since MRPL has blocked any water supply to Sarapadi dam, the lower Netravati areas are drying without water.  This has in turn resulted in decrease of water level in Thumbe dam since water level in river Netravati which is the main water source for the dam, too has come down.  While there was about 8.8 feet water in Thumbe dam on Sunday April 15, it had come down to 8.3 feet by Monday April 16 evening.

The officials have already said that unless MRPL releases water from Sarapadi dam, city may face water problem and there will not be any way than supplying water on alternative days to the city. 

On the other hand farmers are facing severe problem without being able to irrigate their agricultural lands in Shambhoor, Narikombu, Bantwal and surrounding areas.  Meanwhile a special team of MRPL has begun work to stop the leakage of water from Thumbe dam.  But longer the time they take to set problem right, severe will be the result.  Unless something concrete is done city may soon go thirsty once again.
