Udupi, Apr 17: The picturesque Malpe beach near here is all set to play host to two-day-long folklore fair to be held on Thursday April 19 and Friday April 20.

This was announced by deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj at a press conference here on Monday April 16.

The fair will be inaugurated by district-in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya on Thursday April 19 evening.  MLA K Raghupati Bhat will preside over the inaugural function.

Sangappa Hoogar's troupe from Kelur in Hunagunda taluk will perform Karadi Majalu dance while B Takappa and troupe of Sagar will present traditional Dollu Kunita. There will also be a performance of Veeragase by M R Basappa's troupe from Solhapur in Maharastra.

The folklore fair has been organized by the state government in all district centres with a view of protecting and nurturing the rural traditions and culture.  This is also a part of Suvarana Karnataka celebrations.  More than 260 art forms of the state will be displayed during the folklore fairs in order to create awareness about them among the masses and spread a message to protect and nurture them. 

Jaggalige Mela will be staged at Byndoor on April 21 and 22 evenings from 6 to 8 pm along with Veeragase, Halakki Suggi Kunita, Kola and Karadi Majalu.  A similar fair will also be held at Kollur on April 24 and 25 and at Karkala on April 26 and 27.

The district-level folklore fair will conclude with Gigi pada, Veeragase, Kamsale and Kangeelu on April 28 and 29.
