Very unfortunate incident for a person to lose life so young. this should be a wake up call to how we have accepted road safety as a society in India. starting from the way a driving license is granted, the way the roads are laid with unscrupulous contractors, highway authorities receiving bribes, corruption every where, we do not follow any road rules, bad sign boards, inadequate road lighting, insufficient traffic patrols the list is endless, if we have to progress as a nation we have to address the root cause, to reduce accidents we should have a system to check the health of vehicles every year mandatory by a government body like the RTO, the vehicle has to be insured, tested for vital things like the brakes, tyres, safety equipment like the fire extinguisher, danger sign, indicator lights etc. every year only such vehicles that pass this stringent tests have to be allowed to ply on roads, the roads themselves need to be prepared of superior quality, not the ones that have potholes within a month of laying them, the roads have to be marked in lanes, drivers should follow lane discipline and all traffic rules. have highway ambulance patrols, have traffic patrols to attend to accidents prepare reports on the spot. the garages should have these reports before they fix any vehicle with accidents this will ensure that it is not a case of hit and run, without overhauling our system and the "chalta hai" attitude we will not achieve anything. if we implement the best practices followed in the developed world and the places that aspire to be developed we will have fewer accidents with fewer casualties. food for thought.
