Mumbai airport radar conks off, flight hit

Mumbai, June 20 (IANS): The Air Traffic Control radar at Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) suffered a technical snag on Saturday evening, resulting in major flight delays, an official said.

The ATC controlled all domestic and international incoming and outgoing flight operations manually as efforts were underway to rectify the radar system, which was hit by the snag at around 5.30 p.m., till late this evening.

The delays in both arrivals and departures ranged from 15 to 30 minutes and many incoming services of various airlines were compelled to circle above Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport waiting for landing clearances.

This is the second consecutive day flight operations were hit at MIAL, one of the busiest in the country.

Operations were affected for several hours on Friday on account of heavy rains and poor visibility in Mumbai, though the situation had normalized by late night.
