Tawde offers Rs 1 lakh to families of Malwani tragedy

Jun 22 (Mumbai Mirror): State Education Minister Vinod Tawde on Sunday announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to each family of the deceased in the Malwani hooch tragedy. State government bureaucrats opposed the move.

A senior bureaucrat said the compensation proposal was discussed, but there were differing opinions. "Compensation here would be similar to offering compensation to people who have died in riots to police bullets," said the bureaucrat, who did not want to be named. Tawde said that the aid was intended for the families, many of whom lost their only earning member. "In fact some of the families didn't even have enough money to perform the last rites," said Tawde.
