The Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), Bangalore along with three other science museums in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata will be linked through V-Sat by June to enable children interact and learn about science, Director General of National Council of Science Museums, Ingit Mukherjee, has said.

The facility will be extended to other museums in the future, he said. Initially, four mobile science exhibition buses will be linked via V-Sat link, which will be extended to 18 such buses.

Mr Mukherjee said science museums would be set up shortly in Dharwad and Sholapur and a planetarium planned in memory of Indian-born astronomer Kal-pana Chawla in Kuruksh-etra (Haryana). New science museums are being set up in Ranchi, Raipur and Kathmandu (Nepal).

He also said the proposed ‘Science City’ will be a Rs 50-crore project whose location will be decided after allocation of funds in the Eleventh Five Year Plan.

Earlier, the ‘Science for Children Gallery’, the first of its kind in south India, was opened at the VITM. Health Minister R Ashok inaugurated it. The gallery, designed for children between 3 and 12 years, has 30 exhibits. Set up at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, it will help children understand science, Mr Mukherjee said.

“We have created an ambience where children can develop their cognitive abilities,” he said. Some of the attractions include the ‘Walk on the piano’, where tunes can be created by hopping on the keys, and ‘Fun with Mirrors’, where you can see funny reflections of yourself."
