  • Mangalore on an average consumes 2.2 lakh coconuts a day

Mangalore, May 4: People of coastal areas, especially Mangalore are experiencing severe summer this year. They are trying various methods to beat the rising temperature. Two-wheeler riders are especially finding it difficult to wear helmets.

They wait till the last minute to wear them back before they hit the road again. Some riders hang them on the motorcycle once they are out of range of traffic police posts. Some of them have switched over to the miner's cap as it allows some airflow. According to the police, the miner's cap is not allowed and there is no direction from the authorities to relax the helmet rule even during summer.

Superintendent of Police Dakshina Kannada B. Dayananda told The Hindu that there had been representation from various outfits for relaxing the helmet rule but the police was not in a position to do anything, as it was a Government order.

According to Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike convenor Hanumanth Kamath, heat in coastal areas is unbearable and it is difficult for riders to wear helmets.

The sale of miner's cap has also gone up and many riders using black helmets have switched over to either white or silver, which reflects the sun.
