Mumbai, Jul 1 (TOI): The Mumbai BJP on Monday deliberated on the Bombay high court's recent judgement on temporary mandaps and pandals on the city roads for religious festivals, it is learnt.

The city BJP may not be in a mood to confront the high court on its judgement, but a large section of party workers is upset with the court ruling which says that denying permission to erect temporary pandals on roads and footpaths for festivals shall not amount to breach of fundamental right to religion unless the organisers prove that the place has religious significance.

"We obviously can't take a stand against the judgement as we are in power in the state. However, a sizeable section of our workers think that the judgement will come down heavily on religious festivals," said a party activist.

Saamna, on the other hand, has, in an angry editorial, taken strong exception to the Bombay high court's judgement. "The court should dispense justice, it shouldn't encroach on the functioning of the state government," said the Sena morninger.

"By commenting on religious and political matters, courts are trying to impinge on a government duly elected by people," added Saamna.

Stating that the high court judgement will directly affect the Ganesha festival in Mumbai, Saamna dared anti-noise pollution activists to take a firm stand against festivals of other religion as well.
