Sullia, Jul 3: Resenting the decision of the principal not to admit them into the final year of the degree course, five students of the government first grade college here began their hunger strike in the college premises on Thursday July 2. The college however, held on to its ground, asserting that this step was influenced by the repeated acts of indiscipline on the part of these students.

Final year B Com degree students, Srikrishna A K and Shylesh P D, final year BBM student, Anil Joseph, and BA degree students, Nitin P M and Chetan Rai, started their protest by sitting silently in front of the principal's chamber. After the matter came to their notice, some police personnel also visited the college.

On behalf of the locals, Vinay Kumar Kandadka, Seetanand Berpadka, Padmanabh Choutaje etc visited the principal and requested him to admit these students into the final year degree course.

Principal of the college, Meera Rao, said that these students have been engaged in activities like assaulting other students, teasing girls etc within the college premises since the last two years. 'Their parents had been summoned to college several times, and they had executed bonds. Still, the boys failed to correct themselves. As no other option was left, we had no other choice but to issue them transfer certificates. A decision not to give them admission was also taken at the meeting of college teachers. We have also written to the university and department of collegiate education about this development,' she explained.

One of the students to have been denied an opportunity to continue education here, named Shivaram, did not take part in the protest. The principal said he had expressed his desire to get admitted to some other college.
