Mumbai, Jul 23: Judean Women Cell, a Catholic women’s organization of St Jude’s Church, under the leadership of Sr Seema, organized ‘Cancer Screening Camp’ on Sunday July 12 at the KG Corridor Hall, St Jude’s High School, Jerimeri.

Sr Seema, head of the cell inaugurated the camp by singing a bhajan.

Core group members Mamtha Chettiar, Sheila Chettiar, Maria D’Costa, Rani Fernando, Flora D’souza and Sr Seema welcomed Anita Peter, director, Cancer Patients Aid Association, Mumbai and her team of 20 members with flowers.

Anita Peter highlighted the importance of organising such screening camps. She said, “The main aim behind organizing such mega medical camps are to provide good health services. Therefore people are requested to make use of these camps. As much as best education is important, best health services are also important”.

The screening program involved the following examinations/test: The head and neck examination which included an indirect Laryngoscopy (IDL), visual examination of the oral cavity-Buccal Mucosa, Hard and Soft Palate, Tongue and Gingivo - Buccal Sulcus for pre-cancerous lesions along with a complete ear-nose-throat check-up by an ENT specialist and head & neck surgeon.

The gynaecological examination for women consisted of a complete internal examination including a per-speculum visual inspection of the uterine cervix and a Pap smear (cytological examination) test for early detection of cervical cancer. The surgical examination for women consisted of clinical examination (palpation) of the breasts and all women were taught BSE (breast self examination).

A routine blood test– HB & WBC and a complete general check-up by a physician were done.

Around 110 women participated in this screening camp. As JWC could not accommodate more than 110 members, due to overwhelming response, they are planning to conduct such camps in near future also.

Parish priest Fr Lancy Pinto and assistant priest Fr Gabriel Maria also graced this camp.

Secretary Maria D’Costa thanked the medical team, Sr Seema, fathers, core group members, volunteers, the supporters and all the participants for their cooperation on the occasion.
