New Delhi, July 30 (IANS): The Indian girls basketball team will participate in the fourth Asia Under-16 Championship in Medan, Indonesia, from August 2 to 9.

The team will depart on Thursday and will return on August 11. To provide further exposure, an exhibition match will be held on August 10 against the U-20 Indonesian team.

The Indian team is led by head coach Abhay Chavan from Maharashtra with the assistance of former India captain Divya Singh. Point guard Nishanti Masilamani from Chennai was chosen as the captain.

In the last edition of the biennial championship in 2013, India had finished fifth, repeating their position from the 2011 edition. India have been grouped with China, Japan, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Thailand.

India will start their campaign against South Korea (August 2) before facing Japan (August 3), China (August 4), Thailand (August 5), Chinese Taipei (August 6). August 7 will be a rest day followed by the knockouts on August 8 and 9.

"We are looking to build on the momentum started by the senior men's national team who won the gold at the fourth SABA Championship earlier this month," Basketball Federation of India (BFI) president K. Govindaraj said.

Indian contingent: Neha Vinod Shahu, Rutuja Jaywant Pawar, Vaishnavi Yadav, Ria Sharon, Snigddha Nair, Sushantika Chakravortty, Ishwarya Janardhan, Nishanthi Masilamani, Shrishti Suren, Namrata Hooda, Shreyasi Vats, Sandhya Chandahalli Raju.
