Mangaluru, Jul 31: The council meeting of Mangalore City Corporation was held at Mangala auditorium on Thursday, July 30. Mayor Jecintha Vijay Alfred chaired the meeting.

Two minutes silence was observed to pay tribute to Dr APJ Abdul Kalam who passed away on July 27.

Opposition members alleged that MCC is collecting more taxes from people but the service provided to them is disappointing. Opposition member, Sudhir Shetty said, "Even small houses are asked to pay Rs 480 as garbage management tax. On the other hand Antony waste management is collecting the waste from outskirts and their vehicle was found collecting garbage. The ruling party had promised to reduce this cess. When the corporation is in need of revenue why they have increased only 45 percent on hoardings on corporation property?"

Replying to this works committee president Harinath Jogi said "Previous commissioner had increased the amount on hordings and made a decision not to increase it until 2016. But we called a meeting with these people and amicably decided to increase this amount by 45 percent. If we increase it more, they will go to court and the corporation will lose the revenue what it is receiving now. Garbage cess has been reduced to Rs 240 just the half of the previous amount."

Smart City

The meeting took a resolution to nominate the city for the smart city plan after the city won 96.88 marks in the evaluation process done by state mission director.

Mayor said speaking about teh smart city plan "Score card on smart city was prepared and Mangaluru has got maximum score in the evaluation meeting held in Bengaluru. So we have a high chance of getting a smart city status among 6 cities."

Underground drainage

Opposition members alleged that drainage system in the city is not working properly. They said with blockages everywhere, not all the STP's were working properly. They opposed the 2nd stage of KUDCEMP as there are some works pending in the 1st KUDCEMP. Replyining to this officials replied that there are STP plants in Pachanady, Kavoor, Surathkal, Bajal, Jeppinamogaru, Kudroli. Surathkal STP which is not working due to electrical cable problem will be repaired soon.

On pending works in KUDCEMP 1, commissioner Gokuldas Nayak said "Under the leadership of urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, a meeting was held in Bengaluru in which mayor, deputy mayor and local MLA took part. It was decided that the estimated Rs 19 crore for the pending works will be completed."

Water problem

Many members complained about the water problem in their wards and said that officials always mentioned electricity problem as the reason. One member said that at Katipalla and Krishnapura, pipes are 20 years old and they need to be changed as they have problems every other day.

The officials replied that 'the tender has been called and the pipes would be replaced at the earliest. There were power cut in the pumping stations so there was problem in the water supply.'

Water bills

BJP corporator Vijay Shetty said "People have not received the water bills from past 6 months. It becomes difficult for them to pay, if the bills are sent once in 6 months. Now people are asking for bills. The company which is responsible has collected bills only from 29,000 connections out of 77,000 connections. So there is serious need to take some action on this company."

Replying to this commissioner said "Previous contractor Bellari based company which was not collecting the bills in a proper way. so now tender has been given to some other company and the old company has not surrendered all the data. Once the data transfer is done, bills will be collected promptly."

Footpath

There was a demand for footpath as the corporation has been concentrating only on concreting the roads. They said that people need footpath to walk due to heavy traffic.

Works committee president Deepak Poojari said "As there are only few contractors who can take the work costing more than Rs 1 crore, the work will be divided into small amounts and given."

Many other issues like traffic jam in the city, parking problems were also discussed in the meeting. Purushotham Chitrapura, the deputy mayor was also present in the meeting.

Yeah,Mangalore becomes the Smart City ,but why people are not smart to revolt .we have good concreted roads and again the MCC is coming up with the 16 Crore project of constructing new roads in the city and not the footpaths .the footpaths land are granted to the builders for their parking needs.the MCC is permitting the rich builders and Hotel owners to construct hotel & commercial complexes and convert the roadside and footpaths to Parking bay and the building basement will be allotted to shops which should be the parking area for the customer of that respective building or commercial complex. We Mangalorians don't want to think about the 1984 back MCC which didn't contain the clear planning of City, but from past 10 years MCC have issued license to the building which doesn't have all these proper amenities and the officials are blind towards that & busy with the setback of poor home .Whenever traveling from ladyhill to balmatta & kadri,i find the hotels/buildings using the Roadside&Footpaths as parking area especially near besant College Junction towards PVS,Bunts Hostel Circle Turn ,near karangalpady junction,Nanthoor to Mallikatta/Kadri Dwara & near balmatta Signal ,which is the actual cause for the heavy traffic jams in the City,The Traffic Cops have to look into this issue were they can avoid traffic jams .MCC have got Smart City Approval but if the MCC doesn't Overlook its view towards
these issues & tightens the building norms the Mangalore City will be in Huge Problem soon

you are right. I really agree. but unfortunately no one can change peoples mentality towards to this issues. these are the things purposely happening. eg: traffic signals -how many are following seriously, services related to standard of living - how smooth it is?, how much efficient our panchayat people are?, I can make a list of these kind of issues everyday a common human being faces. what is the use unfortunately "WE CANNOT CHANGE OURSELF, HOW WE TRY TO CHANGE OTHERS"

No doubt, we, the so called Mangaloreans, are, and have been, for a long time now, literate, smart, affluent and outgoing, and I am not surprised at this finding, though the officials in power could have done better when it came to proper planning and infrastructure development of the city at large, especially the layout of the footpaths and roads, control of the traffic and parking system, etc. Also, no real effort has been made to improve the employment opportunities for the local people, by setting up factories and industries in the area in spite of the fact that Mangalore has the added advantage of readily available highly skilled and qualified people in different fields, and also has the port facilities. So much so, the locals are forced to go elsewhere, either to Mumbai or Pune, or to the Gulf States to seek employment. In that respect, the Politicians and the Karnataka Government headquarters in Bangalore have overlooked this city so far, which is a shame indeed!

There is remarkable improvement in the quality of roads in general and mangalore in recent times ..now they need to focus setting up quality foot paths, removing overhead cables, setting right the signal junctions and signal islands ..With regards employment and setting up industries ..they need to allow only eco friendly industries. Not dump industries which cause health hazards to the people or damage the environment. It also needs to setup neat dustbins in public places ..people should also be disciplined and follow traffic rules ,and do not litter or urinate in public places.

Worst ever governing body in the whole nation.None in the political team from our city love our city.I live in the highest taxed area of this city an pay huge a self accessed tax but the drinking water I get is worse than the water which flows in the gutter near my house.Roads around are not been touched from past 7 years.Absolutely no facility for the tax paid.Tenders called for everything, maybe they call tender for their bribes also. That is why no good contractors are ready to take up a job and the ones who take up are brainless people who don't realise every work needs a neat finishing too.Concrete roads have no footpaths. When it comes to gobbling, becoz of taxes paid by peoples hard earned money all these so called leaders are the same and united, irrespective of parties.Fail to understand why we need to spend on elections and choose such people.
