Mangaluru: Unscientific speed breakers pose risk to two-wheeler riders

Mangaluru, Aug 7: Commuters plying via the Padil railway bridge to Bajal road in the city have been complaining that the speed breakers laid on the roads near Adarsh School and Tunganagar are ‘unscientific and not traffic friendly’. The humps are not up to safety standards and are not even marked, resulting in frequent two-wheeler accidents and damage to vehicles. Not just that, one of the speed breakers is even damaged.

Speaking to daijiworld, Ramesh who met with an accident due to these speed breakers, said, "The humps laid on the road at Tunganagara are unscientific. Many two-wheeler riders are falling victim to accidents at the spot because of unmarked and unscientific humps."

He also said that he had to spent Rs 20,000 as hospital expenses as he was injured in the accident.

Speaking to daijiworld, corporator Vijaykumar Shetty said, "This issue has come to my notice. I have asked junior engineer Ganapathi to solve the problem and I assure that the humps would be changed."

Ganapathi, junior engineer, Mangalore City Corporation, speaking to daijiworld over the phone said, "We will remove the concrete humps and use asphalt humps in the coming days."

It is not only the issue of humps that is causing nightmares to commuters going towards Bajal. A little way away where the concrete stretch ends, the road is in a pathetic condition, with large puddles forming in the craters. Responding to the issue, the MCC junior engineer said that the road would be asphalted soon.

    There should be some standards for constructing roads.
    The govt Engineers just want to collect money from contractor and sign their bill.
    I dont know when all these things will come to end.

    The court has to file a case on its own and punish these irresponsible Engineers.

    Please note there is a legal document in india for construction of Speed breakers. People can not make speed breaker in any way they like. However it is rarely followed as both public & contractors do not have the intrest. Ref Document IRC 99- 1988

    Whether the humps are scientific or unscientific it is always pose threat to human lives.Because though it will help the drivers to reduce the speed,it is not properly constructed.It looks like mound of soil without any markings on it.Besides there is no warning signs/board before the humps/speed breakers.This will definitely make the drivers to get confused,resulting accidents.The concerned authorities,departments should take note this and ensure that proper safety measures are taken immediately in the best interest of vehicle owners to avert future accidents.

    most of our humps are not humps but bone breakers, the hump near colaco hospital, which is made of hard metal is really unscientific and how can we expect quality humps when we do not have quallity/quallified engineers in our so call mcc.and the next menance is of the signals after installation of signals we see more traffic jam every where. god help us

    SPEED BREAKERS ARE SPEED BREAKERS meant to ensure that at dangerous points the vehicles drive at a much lower speed - thus avoiding chances of accidents. A casual look at the speed breakers seen in the Daijiworld 'write up' indicate that they are alright except that they need to be repaired in some areas. Again one should understand clearly no attempt should be made to overtake vehicles from any side.

    Hope the department of roadways will inspect and remedy the situation if indicated.

    Actually there is nothing called scientific or non scientific humps. Humps are ment for reduce your vehicle speed considerably or completely and negotiate the hump slowly. However administration is at fault for not painting it in reflective paint or maintain the paint when faded. It is also important to put a road sign few meter ahead of hump to alert the driver. I have seen in most cases people try to negotiate the hump without reducing the speed and loosing control of their vehicle and getting injured. In all developed countries road humps are extensively used near schools, hospitals, intersection and people deligently notice them reduce thier speeds and negotiate the humps without any hassles.

    If there is scant regard and respect for human beings by the officials and the politicians it is in India. Backbreaking road humps, to call it the least is unscientific few like mountains to damage the vehicle and injure person seated in it, no remedy/relief for the damage to the human person and the vehicle lack of zebra marking on the humps craters/pot holes just near the humps resulting in fatal accidents are few such instances of the way the citizens are served as part of Good Governance.

    Here why we need a hump ,the road itself is a curve road.Just because school is located,Sign is enough and if they want breaker it must be a longer one( Wider one ,not sudden raised,gradually raised and lowered.

    Within the city limits the speed limit is 30 km/hr. People either do not wear helmets or do not fix the strap( helmet will be useless).
    Since we know the roads have potholes and unspecified humps( speed breakers)- we need to be within speed limits and also wear properly fastened helmet.

    In addition to these irritants of potholes humps,many places where Popular builders( read: cell phone vidhana sabha scandel fame) have built apartments, the drainage manholes are overflowing.

    Lack of proper road signs also lead to confusion.

    Not only these speed breakers but most of the speed breakers of Mangalore city have become spine-breakers as they hurt the two-wheeler riders' back-bone/ spinal cord due to their unscientific height.
    Some steep speed breakers are also exhaust-breakers of scooters and some low-height cars as they damage the vehicles'exhaust pipes beneath.
