Mangaluru, Aug 8: Sea erosion has been a recurring phenomenon in coastal regions all over the country, and every year, hundreds of crores of rupees are gobbled up by surging waves in the form of land, vegetation, property etc and also boulders and sand bags heaped to thwart advancing waves. Although a number of measures had been taken in the past for this purpose, none of them had proved to be foolproof, even after huge investments were made towards them.

Sea erosion is not a phenomenon exclusively witnessed during rainy season. Many coasts suffer from erosion even during summer. In Dakshina Kannada district, Ullal, Someshwar, and Kotepura sections of the coast get hit by sea erosion year after year, and a permanent solution has remained elusive.

The state government has taken up construction of permanent protective walls against sea erosion at a cost of Rs 236 crore under Asian Development Bank scheme. Now, the tetrapods have been stacked at Tannirbavi beach in line with the ones seen at Marine Drive, Mumbai, and so far, have succeeded in their purpose of withstanding onslaught of sea.

Some claim that the government has taken up this task at a spot where this problem is not grave, and which is not in need of such measures. The sand bags heaped at Ullal towards constructing permanent barriers have reached the bottom of the sea. It is felt that huge tetrapods coupled with breakwaters would be able to stymie the aggression of waves at such places.

Deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, A B Ibrahim, notes that huge boulders stacked along the coast had repeatedly been washed away by the sea. The work could not be sustained for long because of shortage of boulders.

"On an experimental basis, tetrapods are being used to stall sea erosion at Tannirbavi. Many countries including USA, Japan and South America have tasted success out of tetrapod experiment. In Mumbai too, this method has successfully blocked advancement of sea. Now, the task of stacking tetrapods, which are made by using cement and granite, at Tannirbavi beach has been going on in full swing. Each of these tetrapods cost nearly Rs 10,000 and the seashore in the city will needs lacs of such tetrapods," he says.

Many people said Tannirbavi has never experienced rage of the sea. They feel that tetrapods should have been used in Ullal and Someshwar beaches, where the situation is really critical, and where the experiment of sand bags and boulders have failed. Some suspect that Tannirbavi was chosen for this project because of the fact that a private golf club will be coming up there shortly.

Mr.Dayanand Salian, Suratkal, sorry to say, its your poor knowledge. Who said there was no sea erosion in this area??

We lost our many coconut trees in this area.

Prevention is always better than cure. Do you think, Government has to wait until another sea erosion in this area & people loose their properties or life??

I do agree this blocks are inconvenient for the locals as well. So, they should plan & install or lay this block systematically to minimise the disturbenses to the locals.

Mr.Shirish,Muscut : The coconut trees which you probably lost must have been in Kumki / Govt. land adjourning the sea and not in your documented land.

    Mr.Dayanand, once again poor knowledge.

First of all compound wall collapsed few years back, do you want documents, I will provide but are you ready to bare the fine on misleading the public?

Secondly, suppose if anyone's coconut trees fallen due to sea waves which is on kumki land for many years, means it is not sea erosion??

What you call that? Coconut trees drunk & lost balance & fell ?? Or Mr. Dayanand kicked the trees & fallen?

Before commenting on media, please visit Karavali from Guddekopla to Sashihittlu & ask them how many Coconut trees they lost within last 3 years? Sashi Hithlu even they lost house.

Here I can't post pictures otherwise, I have few pictures to show you.

Where ever we live but I love our Native & every month I visit & also collect such pictures of Karavali.

This concrete blocks are the right one to minimize the current of the waves. Far better than ordinary blocks of rocks.

A new, innovative, economic and highly successful Green SAB Technology has been proposed to Karnataka Government. The details of this technology can be found at
    https://plus.google.com/101194826952224271949/about
I am trying a experimental opportunity along the Karnataka Coast Since 2010. Readers are requested to recommend this technology as I assure you to reduce the poverty in the country with this technology. Proposals for 4 sites have been submitted. I have contacted local MLA, Mr. U.T.Khader for his recommendation to get an pilot opportunity in Dakshina Kannada. Tetrapod seawall have little higher interlocking compared to RMS Seawallss with huge financial burden on the public.

There are two break waters one at bengre and one at Ullal constructed few years back to safe movement of fishing boats and small ships into old harbour. Due to this, soil and dirt accumulated in northern part of the breakwater to some extent and looks like land extended. But in southern part of the south breakwater due to its existence, sea erosion taking place with the influence of large current waves. This is practical. People have every right to know whats going on in protection of sea erosion work by visiting the concerned offices at old port.

I personally feel, that first an fesiblity study needs to be made, i know people in power can make a lot of money, at what cost, forgoing your evening or sunday walks at the beach or a dip at the sea. Well, upto you guys, you dont loose, because you dont visit these places, we commoners do.There is no errosion at Tanirbavi area, yes of course they do have at Ullal and someshwar area, do the needful there, God knows how many boulders would be put under neat and window shopping of the tetrapods on the top and No one want to voice out, why do i do ? Well our next generation needs to see it, what beaches are. All self fish motives will take its own course. Never ever play with mother nature, she is calm but when she is on you.... you are gone

Sad that we won't be able to have a sea bath on a sunday with such huge boulders / tetrapods being dumped on the coast mercilessly. Even in places where there has been no sea erosion for 100 years, these things are being dumped without care and planning. People of Mangalore and outside will not be able to use / enjoy the beaches of Mangalore in future. I wonder as to who is manufacturing these tetrapods and who has bagged the contract to mercilessly dump it on our beaches.

Even in Hosabettu / Surathkal / Mukka big boulders are being mercilessly dumped although there has been no sea erosion for over 100 years. What is the logic behind this ? Who has made a study and who has bagged the contract ??

One of the reason why we have sea erosion is due to these type of walls. Beach is a dynamic process. Mangroves used to prevent this erosion and we have destroyed all of them. Rampant illegal construction goes unhindered. The logical approach is to avoid disturbing the natural movement of sand along the coast. But money controls everything. First it was boulders and now tetrapods which destroy both look as well as coastline.

TETRAPODS should be manufacture din mangalore with standard specs clean and neat..
    lasting for centuries..
Koreans have done a wonderful job in Fujairah International harbor in 1980s with Tetrapods to stop erosion.they were as clean and neat even to look at..
let us do a better job...
save 7,000 miles of our coast with 3 oceans flowing..
along with dams to stop the fertile soil and water going waste to the seas.

There is no transparency and accountability. This is due to blurred Procedure or Procedural lapse.
First set the Procedure, involve common man ( Not just JP). This will check the loot of Public money.
The tetrapods are good to check sea erosion. These can be accounted at factory. Even Government can set a small unit on coastal belt, and employ unemployed youth. A Concrete batching Plant and Precast yard is a small investment for Government. Next call tender for Transport and install per number of tetrapod taken out from Plant and installed at shore. I don't think, there is chance to loot once the factory production is controlled and accounted. But Our Netas and Babus Prefer to play dumb charade game. A profitable game indeed, that amass wealth for coming nth generation at people cost.
Tetrapods cannot disappear like rocks, if well designedThis is the Truth.
