Currency notes carry deadly pathogens, says study

New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI): The currency notes in your wallet could be the carriers of pathogens that may leave you grappling with skin diseases, gastro-intestinal infections and even tuberculosis, a research has found.

An average Indian currency note roughly has Eukaryotic species such as fungi (70 per cent), bacterial populations (9 per cent) and viruses (1 per cent), according to a research by the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB).

“We identified 78 pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis. Our analysis also suggests a significant diversity in the microbial population on paper currency notes and presence of antibiotic resistance genes,” said S Ramchandran, Principal scientist at the IGIB and one of the authors of the paper.

The pathogens on the currency notes can lead to several skin diseases, fungal and gastro-intestinal infections, respiratory disorders and even tuberculosis, the paper said.

Samples were collected in sterile plastic bags from random spots such as street vendors, grocery shops, snack bars, canteen, tea shops, hardware shops, chemists and other places across the Delhi metropolitan area. The samples mostly comprised notes of Rs 10, 20 and 100 denomination which are widely used. Many countries have withdrawn paper currency notes and replaced it with plastic because of similar reasons.

“We are already using plastic money (credit and debit cards) but their use is still not in widespread. One must follow hygienic practices and sanitise hands after handling currency notes to avoid any kind of infection,” Ramchandran added.

It is Long ago known that currency notes are carriers of many diseases of infections. In India still worst because the currency notes are very old who knows when they were renewed .In olden times People were carrying them in their undergarments before the chaddis came in mode.Vendors ,merchants in fish and meat market too Exchange them without washing Hands.Afterall we too take in Hands before blaming others. so better wash Hands properly before you consume Food with Hands.afterall not only banknotes, many People dont wash Hands after going to toilets.so dont concentrate only on bank notes but daily living in a hygienic manner to be done.travelling in buses?can also bring home many diseases.in a big crowd we do face many sick and we can be sick through that.this and that everything is not good. Our environment also is more dangerous.my God we have to live with it.

Already Indian currency is sky rocketing against USD under the Pathogenic Liars regime instead of going down to 30 rupees as promised by lying brigade and we have one more bad news of pathogens in currency notes. Is there Pathogens in black money too??? Is the M.A. (Political Science) educated Feku going to sterilize the currency notes before handing 15 Lakhs with one and half years interest to everybody?
On a serious note the currency notes are handled by Pork, beef, mutton, chicken, fish, vegetable Vendors and the currency notes retain some traces of meat in them. The Notes are also handled by farm keepers of diseased chicken, mutton, pork & beef and the pathogens jump to others through these Notes. They are also handled by beggars and by people with communicable diseases like TB, MARS, SARS, Dengue, chickengunya, malaria, etc. Hence, if Feku is genuinely concerned of the citizens then he needs to introduce plastic currency notes before gifting us 16 lakhs from the black money.

For that matter any article/piece of furniture which is open to public use especially those in a public area (as opposed to a restricted public space such as airports etc.) is a potential threat to health safety but then it is impossible to carry 'Dettol' with us everywhere we go.

Can be resolved easily Jossey, you dont need plastic notes. Implement sterilisation machines in all banks and ATM machines. UV rays can kill any type of germs.
I think there are ways if we wish to do. But people who have always hatred filled in their mind tend to attribute everything on BJP and Modi which is unfortunate today.

This is not a new finding. It is a well known fact as currency notes may have passed through so many hands such as persons who are sick with TB etc., meat vendors, fish vendors, vegetable vendors, garbage disposal workers, chemical factory workers and also through persons who have unhygienic habits etc.. Hence it is a must for people to wash their hands clean with water and soap/sanitize hands every time after handling currency notes and before going on to do some other activity.
