Karate girl kicks her way out of molesters' clutches

Barasat, Sep 8 (TNN): A 16-year-old girl returning home alone in the evening seemed like an easy target for two drunken men. They reached out to grab her, only to get a fistful of fury.

The teenager punched them in the face, kicked them where it hurts most, left them bloody, battered and bewildered — and running for their lives. In Madhyamgram, the northern outskirts of Kolkata where molestation and rape are almost an everyday nightmare, the story of a fightback has turned this karate girl into an instant hero.

When TOI spoke to her, she was all charged up and still in sparring mode. "Mere mukh pathiye diyechi (I smashed their faces). They got what they deserved. I am not afraid of them," the braveheart said. "I started learning karate a year ago because I feared I might be sexually assaulted. Crimes against women have risen alarmingly in our part of town. I wanted to be able to defend myself and I am glad I did," she said.

The duo, who are on the run, are habitual offenders. They are in a group of five that hangs around Doltala area, harassing any woman who passes by. "They had been teasing me and my friend for the past few weeks. I had complained against them to local people but no one dared speak a word against them. They are a terror for women," she said. "I told myself that if it crossed a line, I would fight back."

On Monday evening, she was returning home from karate class, clad in a track suit, when the duo spotted her. "They were on bicycles. They suddenly sped towards me and pushed me hard. I fell down. They were drunk and hurled filthy abuses at me. When I protested, they grabbed my hand and tried to drag me away," she said. The teenager sprung at them. "I punched one of them in the temple and the other in the face. The first one staggered back, shocked. The other one fell down, groaning and holding his face in his hands. I could see blood dripping through his fingers. The first one tried to punch me. I blocked it and threw a front kick. He collapsed in a heap. The other one again came at me, and I hit him with a barrage of punches to his face and temples. Both of them were writhing on the ground," she told TOI.

Passersby stood stunned. Still no one came forward to help. The battered duo staggered to their feet, got back on their cycles and pedaled away, threatening to teach her a lesson. Local resident Shankari Haldar, who witnessed her in action, said, "I was stunned by her courage. She kicked and punched the youths and they fell flat. But it is unfortunate that they managed to flee. Other girls should also learn martial arts to keep such criminals at bay."

The girl filed an FIR. Police say they have identified one of the accused and raids are on to arrest them. "When I started learning karate, my parents did not support me. Now I am sure I will never stop practicing martial arts."

Whatever the story her courage has to be appreciated. She should be a role model to other girls to fight against rapists. There should be deaths to rapists when they try to molest girls so that it will act as deterrent. It is shocking and shameful that man act like beasts and attack in a group on hapless woman. Repeated rape news made Indians to bow down head in shame internationally. Proved rapists has to sentenced severely with impotence.

I also feel that some kind of self-defense arts should be made mandatory to girls in schools and colleges.

Relying on the cops is of no use.

well.. I totally appreciate what the girl did. In this poverty stricken where majority of people are BPL who can afford to take up Karate classes? Generally In terms of Strength God has blessed it more to men than women in order to protect them. now dont misunderstand me with Equality and identity. anyways i will make it clear Men and women are Equal but not identical

Mangalore girls, ladies must show some interest in martial art and self-defense and can bring some eve-teasers or girls chasers to task, before police reach the scene. Good luck.

All girls should learn basic martial arts specially in Managalore in order to protect them from Job less goons who either hurt girls mercilessly or try to come close to the girls in the pretext of protecting culture.

You must have seen in YOUTUBE how jobless goons kicking girls in the name of culture. Some people are like clouds when they go away from society the day gets brighter. Sad part is, when they go to jail our politician brothers use high influence and again bring them back to our society and the same story starts again.

    Brave girl.

Our moral police in mangalore should start some karate / judo / marshal art classes for the girls and train them how to fight when the need arises. This is the best way of keeping the girls safe.

Dear Shanker, specially in our mangalore moral police only interested in protecting girls, they should think about this first. I know most of the moral police not aware of the karate / judo / marshal art but they can sponsor (financial help if some require) for the girls above 4 years old and other females who are interested in studying those activities.

gm, Do you know the background of members in Moral Police groups ? They are not working, only lingering in some 'Katte' or Paan Shops wasting time. One sister of a member herself said that on this website once !Some big shots pay for their food or other expenses, that is how they meet their needs. Why are you still encouraging Moral Policing ?

As Sudhakar asked you, are our brothers/Father handicapped to look after their women ? Try to live a life yourself young man, not as directed by the Moral Police !

    Dear Lydia Lobo,

I am not encouraging moral policing at all. I wanted to check moral police police have some moral they should do this or they should stop their shops. We are not handicapped so we do not want any moral police. Shanker needs moral policing and also he asks are we handicapped. Shanker should think over this matter seriously so he will get a clear answer.

gm.. it will be like 'Aa bail, mujhe maar' for the moral police because the very girls who got trained under their guidance will give them a hard kick when they interfere in their personal matter. For example, if a girl is traveling with her brother and the guys ask either her to tie him a Raakhi or him a Mangal-Sutra to her..

Karate is OK to sober up a couple of drunkards, but no adequate defense against guns and acids and btw, as you suggested if the moral police force embarks upon this task of teaching/training, chances are that in the name of training......well, that might turn out just doctor ordered for them!!

She is the victim and she can thrash those goons. Anyone (if she is girl or those who are in trouble) unable to protect themselves from some bad happenings then public can catch and handover the culprit to the police or help the victim by providing their help hand. Public do not have any right to beat up anyone. If a person met with an accident, really he is fighting in between life and death nobody is there to help him. People should help the needy in proper way. I hope you understand better than me because you are in Dubai. Are the people do the same thing in Dubai when someone fighting or doing bad things? Can you beat anyone there? Is the Dubai law treats like you in the same what you say?

Dear gm, who are these moral police. We have noticed that they are goondas who have molested girls in many occasions. They are trying to rape girls and snatch valuables from innocents in the name of moral policing. They are jobless goondas being supported by some political party for their own benefit. We need our society free from these illegal moral police. If you need moral policing by goondas, then we should close our Police stations. Yes, we need our girls to learn martial law/ karate to defend these moral police while they try to harass any innocent.

    gm,
There are 2 things. In Dubai no one is having the dare to touch girls. Secondly, in a few minutes police are near to the victim. Is it the same in our Mangalore or anywhere in our India?. Thrash for any mis behavior and give the shock before handing them over police. Any way Police will do their duty inside. They have to get internal/external treatment to get out from their KAAMA Mode.

Woooo.. Haha... This is what I have been telling you girls - that there is no need to fear anyone - live with your head up, with dignity.

For that, you need to equip yourself with skills that this girl has. Crying after something bad happens, brings you no glory - defending your honor like this does ! So, get out of your cocoon and learn to live your life with full zest !

We want no molesters/rapists around, we want to assume what may have happened with them whenever we encounter each man with a broken jaw or a hip !
